External .mxo not recognized by max.

Do I need to point something in the max application to that file directory to update it?

I put the downloaded .mxo in the correct path
USER/Documents/Max 8/Packages/etc...

I can open the .maxhelpfile and copy the objects into my main project. Just wondering if that is what I HAVE to do, or if it should come up in my searches like the "karma~"(< external downloaded through package manager) object?
