FM Tutorial - simpleFM - FM8
I'm going through the FM tutorial ( https://docs.cycling74.com/learn/articles/06_synthesischapter05/ ) with the 05yFMSynthesis.maxpat patch that uses simpleFM~
In the screenshot, I'm using 900 for the carrier freq and 800 for the Harmonicity val with mod and amp envelopes, and the sound is sort of a noisy percussion sound.
I'm trying to reproduce this sound in FM8 ( or in any FM synth ) with a simple 2 operator config ( one operator modulating a carrier ) but not having any luck getting a similar sound. I'm not sure what to use for the Carrier and Modulator ratios ( am using 1.00 for Carrier ratio and 0.88 for the Mod ratio ( 800 / 900 ) but probably don't understand how this works. ). I'm approximating the Mod and Amp envelopes in FM8.
Would this be possible in FM8 ( or any other FM synth)? Thanks for any help!

Hi E Boats!
Your modulation ratios in a FM synth are the amplitud of the different signals, or operators. On the simple FM object the third inlet: "modulation index" would be the amplitud of the modulation signal, or put simply how much modulation is happening.
The harmonicity ratio is a multiple of your original frecuency so a factor of 2 to 10 may give you more "harmonic" results, bigger numbers will be noisy. So if you want to replicate in other synth you have to make the same relationships and similar parameters/numbers.

because the DX7 uses phase modulation it will only sound the same as linear FM does when the operators are pure sines.
