Help with learning Jitter.

Hello Max users,

I was wondering if any of you knew of any good places to learn Jitter? I have been trying to figure this out for quite some time now but it's just not clicking. Maybe I'm slow haha but seriously it has really been getting under my skin... I see awesome visuals like this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjg-luytpUk&list=RDvjg-luytpUk#t=121 - and would give anything in the world to learn how to do it.

I have no experience with animation, programming, coding and I suck at math. I have ideas though... I am currently limited by music production and sound design however that wont be very interesting to play live without awesome visuals! All the tutorials I find online suck! They either don't go into detail and explain or they are going into great detail but not creating anything interesting. I have had a very hard time trying to find schools that teach Max.

I feel like all odds are against me when it comes to this I mean how is one supposed to learn this? There are patch files to download but It just so confusing. I have no idea what any of the objects do. If there was someone who was a complete idiot, the most kind of idiot someone could be when it comes to max, I am even more of one. I am just completely lost... Can someone help me out with this?! I just want to fly with Jitter and right now I feel like everytime I try to learn how to use my wings, I get them ripped off.. Ill even pay for online courses as long as they are good and will teach me everything and will allow me to ask questions and communicate with the instructor.

Thanks for reading,
Aaron

Aaron, you're the most thoughtful idiot I ever heard.

I had no coding experience prior to Max (aside from very basic HTML and one or two short-lived attempts at learning processing). The last formal math class I took was in my sophomore year of high school, which, by the way, I barely graduated. I thought I was so clever when I avoided math my last two years. You see, I was an arteeest and pontificator, not a mathematician. Yet 20 years later I was searching wikipedia for explanations of basic arithmetic and algebra so I could make my art.

But you know what? No big deal. Unlike other programming platforms, Max doesn't just favor coders and math geeks above everyone else. Max favors conceptual and logical thinking. You can suck at all of the other stuff as long as you can sort things out logically. Somehow I went from looking up the meaning of a square root to coding image processing algorithms from scientific and academic literature. My projects evolved from basic ideas about colors and shapes to (currently) developing tools for imaging, video processing, photo-realistic simulations of oil, ink and watercolor painting and video games for my cats.

You are most certainly capable of learning Max and learning it well - but ime, it requires a kind of approach that favors the journey over the destination. Ultimately, there is no secret to learning something. You need to do it a lot and the only way you're going to do that is if you settle into the process of figuring shit out. You gotta start where you are. Do you know about button object and the message "bang"? That's a good place. Build your own library of snippets and patches... one to access your web cam [jit.grab], another to play midi sounds, etc.

The issue is not about ability but choice. Just know that it most definitely 'gets easier' the more you do it. But only if you do it. If that means getting some help online or locally, make it happen. Good luck!

if you are already into music production i woudl recommend that you first start to biuld something in max/msp releated to audio effects, audio synthesis, and the generation and processing of midi notes (or numbers).

it is easier to learn the programming language first in a field where you know the theory already,

Hello Valery, Strange, I had several visits to my site today, yesterday, and it runs ok on my browsers: safari, google chrome, explorer, which browser are you using? In which country are you? ( perhaps is that? ) I will check anyway, thanks for telling . Here's the link again , can you try copy-paste on your browser?

Any chance to reach your tutorial videos on YouTube/Vimeo? (Looks like the Jitter course is not available on your YouTube channel).

Hi Sabina,

just to confirm-- this dives into Jitter solely, so it's tailored on Max users who want to branch out?

Thank you.

Gabrielle, Yes, exactly. The course is specialized on Jitter, and basic knowledge of Max is desirable.
