How can I route the sound output from a DAW as an input/object in Max? [Windows 10]

What I'm trying to do is use the BBC Symphony Orchestra VST's sound output and send it into Max to be altered through the SimpleFM~ object such that the carrier signal/sound is a real instrument sound that is then modulated (and/or to do similar effects, such as amplitude modulation, with these VST sounds).

I've seen some reference to the rewire~ object but I'm not sure if I understand how to use it properly and/or if it's viable.

One thing I've done that I thought could be helpful is to use loopMIDI and MIDIOX such that my MIDI input devices can be used simultaneously in multiple programs on Windows, and I can imagine there potentially being a way to use that for my goals here, but I'm not sure.

I'm using Windows 10 if that matters.

using max as VST Host, getting midi from DAW is one option,
but with drawbacks, because instruments loaded, automation etc
which might be running in the DAW would have to be replicated in Max.
do you have audio interface that has few free I/O channels
that can be used in both Max and you DAW at same time ?
even unused digital pipe like spdif or adat.
or try jack https://jackaudio.org/ or similar app to app audio routing
