How to trigger a bang event from a midi note?

I'm brand new to max for live and have gone through some tutorials on how to create a simple synth.

What I want to do is make a synth where each time a midi note is sent in, the filters and so forth are randomly tweaked.

I see that there's a "random" object you can use which requires a bang event as an input to make a new random number. How do I make it so each time the velocity on the midi input goes from 0 to something other than 0 it makes a bang event to tell the random object to update its value?

Or is this not the right way to go about it?

Hi Nick
You can do this with many ways
You can connect your [midiin] with a [sel] object and take the output from the right outlet
as follows..

If I understand correctly, you need something to recognize the passage from zero to non-zero, so here you are:
