I created a simple patch that draws randomly sized rectangles over and over while zooming, so they create a pattern of some sort. What I would like to do is have the rectangles disappear after some time.

My (not very elegant) hack first was to just bang a clear every now and then and erase everything before too many rectangles start building up.

Then I thought maybe I can take the coloured rectangle message and delay it through a pipe~ object but replace the colour with the background colour. In my thought that would paint over the coloured rectangle, therefore erasing it. Turns out the rectangle is not in the same place anymore after the pipe~ delay comes through. Not what I wanted, but produces some cool patterns anyways as a side effect 😄

Is there a way to clear what I drew earlier after some time interval? I would really appreciate if someone can share an idea, a patch or anything else that might send me off in the right direction.

Even if I really like the result, your solution doesn't work for what you want to do because of the [jit.rota] zooming in at every frame, making the rectangles to "move", while their delayed white version  is created at the initial position. You could use that solution without zooming in, but then another problem rises: you need to create your white framerect with the same pensize as the first ones, so you need to pipe the pensize as well. But then the other problem is that you draw your white rectangles on top of everything, so each white rectangle doesn't just erase a rectangle, but also bits of every other rectangle that might overlap.

Another approach, and the simplest I can think of is to take advantage of your white background and multiply colors by something like 1.01 in your feedback loop so colors fade away along time.

Another approach would be to use jit.gl objects, especially one [jit.gl.gridshape @shape plane @dim 2 2 @gridmode 0 @matrixoutput 1] as your base rectangle, attached to a [jit.gl.mesh @draw_mode quad_grid], attached to a [jit.gl.multiple] to keep track of every rectangles. Then you could fade them individually. If I get a bit of time soon I'll give this approach a try. You can refer to

Thanks so much! That is a great direction you're giving since I wanted to get rid of the non-gl objects anyways in the longer run. Very helpful, I'll try it out and start tinkering 😊
