I was wondering if I could preserve the functionality of the ui_listen maths whilst having a different input device than the keyboard keys?

anim.drive automatic ui handling is only supported for mouse and keyboard input. you will have to handle other input sources yourself. you should be able to hack something together using the "move" and "turn" messages. if you get stuck post your attempt here and I'll take a look.
