keyboard to midi with proper polyphony

yo guys!

I want to use my macbook pro keyboard as a midi controller to trigger midi notes and send them to kontakt. So far I've used the key and keyup objects, which work great until I try to trigger more than 2 notes at a time, at which point notes are dropped or missed and it becomes useless. I need to be able to trigger at least 6 notes simultaneously. It would also be paramount that I can keep another application such as Kontakt at the forefront with max in the background and still process the notes.

I've looked into the HI object but have not been able to find much information on decoding the HID stream into useful numbers to transform into midi notes.

Does anyone have any experience or ideas on how to make this a reality?
