Looking for freelancer to create artnet external

ironside's icon

Hi everyone. I’ve been posting on here for a while about ArtNet, and I’ve decided to bite the bullet.

I’m looking for a freelancer who would be able to code a native Max object which sends and receives artnet from Max. This object would then be open sourced so that there is a possibility of maintaining it long term.

I‘d be keen to keep the scope of the object limited - for example not incorporating complex fixture assignment features etc. I have a lot of artnet equipment which can be used to develop on, although I’d also probably expect whoever might be interested in this to have a good amount of experience in the lighting world.

This is self funded as a project, but I do have a budget. Maybe this is a long shot but I was wondering if anyone might be interested?

Thanks!

hi,

Yes, I could put something into this too. Let me know when you have an idea of the cost. Maybe best to email me - davidestevens at (the apple email address)
I'd need it to run on Silicon Macs.

Hi, is it possible to develop this without actually having artnet hardware. Is there free software etc. that could be used to varify sending/receiving of the external?

nvm, I searched "artnet monitor" and found good results.

I thought David Butler was close to release lxmax.

@ Source Audio

Would be amazing if he does, but I‘ve been a discord member of LXMax group for several years and it seems totally stagnant etc - Butler is incredibly generous with his contributions, but he’s essentially working for free and I can imagine it’s hard to find the time. AFAIK (and I’m just guessing so could be totally wrong), it’s been near release for a couple of years now.

Still fairly amazed there’s no native Artnet in Max in 2023, but thats how the cookie crumbles.

I am not a lighting person, and I don't have artnet experience, but if you don't find the person you are looking for, I would potentially be interested in seeing if this can be done with my Scheme for Max external. I would think using s4m plus the udpobject could be an elegant and fast way to tackle this. It would also have the advantage of enabling users to edit their domain level code much more easily than is the case with a native C external. (A hyrbid approach might also be interesting with a lightweight custom external talking to s4m - s4m itself is a C external). If you don't find someone to do the full-native approach and want to talk to me about it, you can reach me through the s4m github page. https://github.com/iainctduncan/scheme-for-max

Any news on this? I would be down to pay into this as well.

Hey, any movement on this? I would be glad to contribute money towards a solution.

Beam looks very nice, if you want something to run inside Live. But what I (and I think others) want is to have a Max object that we can use to send DMX/ArtNet directly from our patches. Ie a replacement for David Rokeby’s old objects (that have not been updated for non-rosetta use). In particular, it’s not going to work for my installations to have to run an extra app in addition to the Max app.

[edit]
Ha, yes. I hadn’t scrolled down far enough to see the beam for Max link. I (at the moment) agree with Ironside (below) though - Beam looks a bit overkill for my patches - I only need 56 channels at most.

Hi - Sorry I've been very busy with work, but am still interested in trying to find someone who might do this.

I have a Beam licence, and it's nice, but I think there's still a lot of valid use cases for a simpler, free, open source object which sends and receives ArtNet.

For example, I'm often deploying Max on MacMinis, where I'm maybe only addressing 30 or 40 channels of DMX, or a universe of LED pixels, and don't need the functionality of Beam (TBH if I was doing something that would warrant using Beam I'd probably just go the whole hog and use GrandMA onPC or a Nomad etc).

It would be even better if Cycling 74 would support this, but it seems like this is a remote prospect, which surprises me when you think of the functionality of other similar software and how many people are interested in using Max with lights (although I notice reference to working with light has been gradually removed from the prominent copy on the website compared to a few years ago, so I suppose that's just development priorities, which I totally respect). Regardless of these quibbles, it looks like something we may need to fulfil ourselves.

So, apologies for the delay, but if again, if anyone has any links to people that would be great! Once I have some sort of quote or outline on development cost I can get back to people here to see how much we can fundraise.

As well as Beam for Live, there appears to also be a Beam for Max in development - with ArtNet & USB support.
https://beam.showsync.com/beam-for-max

I haven't had time to download or try it out yet - but looks to be exactly what I need!

@IRONSIDE - I think it's likely that the next update to Max will have the USB drivers fixed (on PC and Mac/Apple-silicon) to enable correct DMX output over USB. I've no idea about ArtNet support though.

ironside's icon

@DOMINIK - Beam for Max is already available with the early bird licence costing $59 (will go up to $99). It's good! I'm definitely looking into whether we can make something simpler, cheaper, and with more permissive licencing.

Thanks @IRONSIDE - I'm trying out the demo version right now.

Yes - understand completely about a simple ArtNet object - would be a very nice addition to Max.

davidestevens's icon

Just had a quickish look at the demo, and Beam looks very nice… but massive overkill for any of the simple lighting setups I run. Though for $59, if I can figure out how to recreate my current setup, it night be worth buying, as there’s nothing else obviously on the horizon.
I couldn’t see on the website (though I’ll ask there if no-one here knows…) but will it work with the Enttec ODE3 (connected via ethernet) or is it only USB?

why does no one here needing artnet so bad compile lxmax ?

https://github.com/pixsper/lxmax

same applies to other long ready, for example imp.midi externals for arm64 architecture :

https://github.com/pixsper/pxspr.midi
David Butler must be busy doing other stuff, but from the
look at the code both pxspr.midi and lxmax seem to be ready to compile and use.

I've dabbled in ArtNet and Max before, but not sure if I'm your coder. Still, I'd suggest checking out platforms like Upwork or Freelancer.

davidestevens's icon

I’ve just spent some time with Beam, and with a lot of useful help from one of their coders (on their help page), I’ve gotten lighting output sorted for my main patch. And there are a lot of other possiblities even for my fairly simple application. So I’m impressed, and I bought it.
