I'm looking for (or would like to create) an M4L device which shows me whether the MIDI Ins and Outs of certain tracks in my live set are connected or not (=grayed out). The reason being that I would like to see at a glance whether all necessary MIDI controllers are connected to their inputs and whether certain outputs (for instance IAC Driver) are active.

Is this possible? Would I appreciate any help!

It's possible. You can observe the current input/output selections and compare with the expected connections. For example, here is a patch observing the current input (type) of track 0.
