Has anyone still on Max 6.1.10 upgraded to El Capitan? I want to upgrade soon, but only if it is incompatible with Max 6.1.10 -- and paying $150 for an upgrade is out of the question right now.

Yes I'm using Max 6.1.10 both on El Capitan and Yosemite. My arduinos stopped working after upgrading to El Capitan which is why I downgraded on one computer.
