Max 7: Default settings for new patchers???

Jan M's icon

The only way to customize the defaults of a new patcher in Max 7 seems to be by setting a custom default template in the preferences. I am using this to set i.e background color and grid size.

Unfortunately when I encapsulate some objects or create a new subpatcher the template is not applied.

This makes sense as the default templates are conceptually not a formatting functionality but are intended to to support the patching workflow (i.e. with default objects).

How can I/ can I achieve consistent default settings for new patchers including new subpatchers??

PS: While styles have added some new features, which will hopefully prove to be useful they seem to have have introduced also new limitations due to the paradigm shift... :(

Within the patcher inspector window you are able to set a default template for all subpatchers that appear within the main patch (and this can be saved to the default template).

Thanks, haven't seen that!!

I do not have this experience! Adjusting settings in the Patcher Inspector seems to only work for the currently viewed patcher. A new patcher or subpatch window starts with the default Max 7 settings. Also, I do not get how to save subpatcher template to a custom style, or how to save settings into the default template.

Is it possible to mass copy the template/color settings from Max 6 into 7?

You can try copying the content of "Max.maxdefaults" file, which you can find in /Applications/Max 6.1/Cycling '74/default-settings either into a new .maxstyle file (hence, located in /User/Shared/Max 7/Packages/Max/styles/) or directly into the "default settings" I mention here: https://cycling74.com/forums/default-settings/

NOTE: I didn't try this myself and there can be problems (I guess some names or variables may be different from version to version), so you could try comparing the two files and change only the similar lines...

@LSKA
I tried what you suggested but it did change anything for me :-(

How do you do that? I can't find any option regarding subpatchers.

Ditto, @LSKA, I tried with no results.

The only option I see regarding subpatchers exists in the Patcher Inspector under Editing as "Subpatcher Template." Unfortunately I have created a custom subpatcher template and even when selected, the results are the same as if I had not selected a template at all.

Anyone find a solution to this? I guess it's very obvious but I can't track it down.

Thanks

Before even getting to styles, I wonder if others have any problem because display attributes for the preset object have changed. As a result all Max6 and MaxforLive presentation views containing a preset object could layout with different spacing. I don't know if the same is true for other objects, but this single difference in the preset object means I need to maintain four different versions for Live users (32bit, 64bit, Max6, and Max7). But maybe it is only me having a problem. Anybody else?

OK, I found the answer in another post, thanks Jan :)

All formatting options are now part of styles. You can create a new style with the desired font, then create a new (empty patcher) with this style set; save it as a template and use this template as a default for new patchers (in your template patcher you might also want to set the the default template for sub-patchers to this same template).
