Max 7, DMX and MIDI
Hey guys,
tl:dr; How do i use Max 7 to recive MIDI and transform and send it as DMX?
Background: I'm just starting to learning Max and want to create a simple midi to light rig. After reading on this forum/internett i found a couple of posts containing hints and clues but never in a way that made me understand the tools involved. Most likely this is due to my ineptness.
Perhaps i'm deluding myself on the simplicity, but seeing i only want a 1-1 connection (midi note 1 lights light 1, velocity triggers intensity) this cannot be to hard? How do i do this in Max?
Hardware: Im running the latest OS X (10.10 and 10.11) and i have a ENTTEC DMX USB pro but havent been able to connect to it (no device shows up). How do i use what i have? Is there other tools better suited for the task?
Being a Max novice I'm diving right to the deep end here, be gentle.
tutorials 1 and 2 about DMX by Andrew Pask should put you on your way... https://cycling74.com/tutorials/working-with-hardware-dmx-part-1.
If you're a complete beginner in Max, you should also follow the MIDI tutorials in the help section.
As for the Entecc, which object did you use to get it connected ?
As an official David Butler fanboy, I usually point people in the direction of the [imp.dmx] abstractions: http://www.theimpersonalstereo.com/software/imp-dmx/
I use the Olaf Matthes [dmxusbpro] object for connecting to the ENTTEC box, but David also has an [imp.dmx] object available: https://cycling74.com/forums/enttec-dmx-usb-pro-new-max-object-imp-dmx-usbpro-beta-version/
