Max 7 Released
Hello Forum members,
We're very excited to announce the release of Max 7. We are sharing this news here first, so you are among the very first to know. A lot of great work has gone into this release, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Thank you Cycling 74! Downloading....
nice! and the new subscription modes so cool for teaching!
wooo!
Great news! I seem to be getting an error on first open in the Max window though.
It says: "jit.avf.engine: unable to load object bundle executable" and then a few more lines saying the library was not loaded and finally "Reason:image not found".
I'm running Mac OS 10.6.8 on a Quad-Core Intel Mac Pro. (2010-2012 model I think).
Looking forward to testing out all of the new bits.
Mac 10.6.8 isn't officially supported at this time. Here are the System Requirements:

Running OSX 10.9.5 on an iMac (2 years old). I've tested the new Max 7 against about 15
modeling and simulation patches created in v. 6.1.9. Everything seems fine so far. Good
news! For others: note that Max 7 on the Mac is located under /Users/Shared rather than
in /Applications.
I would expect that it's only under /Users/Shared if you put it there. I put mine in /Applications/Max7
yes!
I love you guys, thanks for your work!

Hi Ben,
just a quick information for those who still are on 10.6 (believe me, it's not always by choice) :
What do you mean by "at this time" ? Is it something that is on a to-do list ? or more "never gonna happen" ?
By the way : Thanks for the work ! Works nice for me on 10.6.8 for the moment.
k.
Mac 10.6.8 isn’t officially supported at this time.
:(( this is exactly why i asked that on the forum a while ago : https://cycling74.com/forums/max-7-mac-os-10/ - a word from a c74 official would have been nice :/
Bleh, whatever. I understand how hindering this backward compatibility can be, and know that Apple are more to blame here.
The demise of the separate runtime and requirement to use it for external debugging has me singing and dancing!
Congrats C74! I'm most stoked about the Jitter improvements.
Btw, did you hire Ableton's web designer? ;)
Nice work!
[jit.grab] and [jit.movie] are great! The same pitch shifting inside MSP objects. Actually I see a lot of great tweaks and features! I'm just diving into new Max I really love it.
I found only two disappointing things:
- lack of more sophisticated support for text rendering in Jitter (the old [jit.gl.text2d] and [jit.gl.text3d] are rather "raw" from my perspective)
- no support for any modern CV library (OpenCV or something)
Moreover I'm not sure about default white-text-on-black-background color scheme. For me it's a bit against ergonomics.
It's sad to see there's still no support for DPI scaling on Windows. I have a 4k resolution 15.6' screen and Max is still a pile of blurry pixels.
(on 10.6.8 it works, have that jit.avf thing as stated above, and a couple other bugs. i would happily provide bug reports, if c74 is interested :) )
Yeah, "unofficially" I believe that most things should work under 10.6.8 at this point, but we likely won't be committing to "official" support. But for the adventurous renegades, you can ignore that error message (and/or delete the jit.avf.engine which won't load under 10.6), and use the qt video engine as set in the Max preferences.
What I'd recommend is setting up a relevant forum thread identifying your issues and/or a user generated WIKI entry for those of you looking to support one another. Keep in mind that we likely won't be responding to any 10.6.8 reported issues, and won't be putting any effort into solving 10.6.8 specific bugs.
With Apple no longer supporting 10.6, and us being pushed by Apple into newer APIs, IDEs, etc. maintaining this kind of legacy support requires more work than we feel it is worth at this point and is something won't be doing in the future. And at some point in the Max 7 lifespan, we might really break things for 10.6.8 whereas many things may work without issue currently.
Best of luck!
There goes my weekend ;)
Thanks for making subscription an option, btw - not keen on this trend for adopting a 100% subscription model.
The new C'74 site & Max/MSP GUI look AWESOME! Thanks for all the hard work! My evenings are now occupied ;-)
First half-hour with Max7 (x64 build on Win7)
1. The 'Tour' fails on loading several assets for jit.playlist (namely track1.mov, chickens.mp4, dust.mp4, sunflower.mp4).
All these assets could be tracked down to C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\Max 7\resources\media\jitter but that's not in the File Preferences.
2. Not a bug but, related to (1) above I noticed there's a C:\Program Files\Cycling '74\Max 7\examples folder like there used to be, but it looks like there's a duplicate at C:\ProgramData\Max 7\Examples which is what the File Preferences points at. Should there be?
3. Every time I launch Max7, it tells me it thinks it crashed the last time I ran it, and offers the 'Recover Edits' dialogue. Nothing crashed, but if I click 'Yes', it doesnt recover anything. Its in demo mode, so I couldnt save anything in the first place. Nevertheless, if I say 'yes' or 'no', and no matter how I close the application, next time it'll do the same thing.
I did try deleting %appdata%\Cycling '74\Max 7 Preferences Files and the next time it launched, it ran the Tour demo on startup without whinging, but every subsequent launch was back to the 'Recover Edits' stage.
4. Two Max.exe instances turn up in the Task Managr when Max7 launches. When Max7 shuts down, the windows close, and one instance of max.exe closes, but the other takes several seconds to close. If Max is launched again while that remaining instance still exists, the 'new' two will close at the same time it does; Max wont open until all previous instances are closed, which is actually a bit of a PITA.
Will there be, or is there, a 64-bit version of Max 7? I'm trying to use Max 7 in Live and I get the error "Max/MSP has the wrong architecture".
Max 7 is 64-bit capable. On Windows, there are two versions of the app, one for each architecture. On OSX, there's a switch in the Get Info... dialog from the Finder to enable 64-bits. It's off by default.
Yaniki, Check out jit.gl.text (no 2d/3d in the name).
Justin, yes, there is a 32 and 64 bit version on Windows, and on Mac, you can select this option in the info pane on the Application in the Finder. If you have Max running already in one arch, you will need to quit and either change the arch in the Info pane, or start it up by clicking on 'edit' in a MFL device.
sxa, some elements of the tour are not supported on Win x64 at this time. Re duplications, yes, this is expected. Re: workspace restore, can you send along an email to support @ cycling74 dot com? Please send your Max 7 preferences so we can take a look. We are still looking at ways of quitting more gracefully. Feel free to include this info in your email to support.
win 64 users are recommended to follow the instructions here, to support playback of factory mp4 files (although not mov files):
https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/live-64-windows-video-playback/
specifically, install the Haali Media Splitter, and ffdshow codec pack components.
Is this a soft launch? It smells like one. If so I'm excited to see what news may come after this.
place your Max 7 packages in ~/Documents/Max 7/Packages/
The new GUI is globally nice but it seems some rationalisation has occured. For instance it's not possible to set a different color for function object's points and segments anymore.
Having control sliders within the object representing a VST or Audio Unit plug-in is a great idea. And the possibility to choose which ones to display and their order is even better.
No more Max folder. Only one package and opening it leads to a completely new landscape.
Where does one put his patchers and externals ? Does the concept of "collections" apply to these ?
Max 7.1 - Github integration? It would be impressive of the new File Browser could have a category that pulled directly from Github.

Strange: there's still a "What's new in Max 6 ?" file in the documentation, but no "What's new in Max 7 ?"...
Thanks, Roald. We will be updating the documentation over time!
-Ben
The playlist~ object shows great potential but it's not clear whether files are fully loaded into memory as with polybuffer~, partly preloaded or not preloaded at all.
Roald, playlist~ is based on sfplay~, so it is mostly reading from disk.
Patcher inspector:"Isolate Start and Stop of Patcher Audio": at last one can stop audio in one patcher without stopping it in the others. :-)
The new "complex warping" tab in groove~'s help file is worth a look, with its dedicated jsui interface.
Does the "JS Painter file" setting for GUI objects mean that javascript is more closely integrated into Max than before ?
To which extent will the new "Language" preference be used for ? User interface only ? Documentation also ? Will it be community-driven or will C74 provide packages from Afrikaans to Zulu ?
If I get it right, the introduction of styles totally eliminates the possibility of defining specific color schemes for every user interface object as it was possible before with the "object defaults" ?
Nope, you can have multi-object styles. Just change the objects you would like to change, select them all, then make a new style. You can then apply this to the patcher itself.
Even further extending this, you can make a template from a patcher with this style, then use it as your default template.
Ahah. I'll check that.
Where can I find additional information about the "Show CPU usage" function ? The documentation doesn't seem to know anything about it.
@larme, @roald: some info about file locations in Max 7 -- https://cycling74.com/forums/how-do-i-add-externals-in-max-7/
>sxa, some elements of the tour are not supported on Win x64 at this time.
Could I suggest that there be information in the patch which says so. Otherwise its somewhat disconcerting.
However, Ive now installed the 32bit version as well and it has its own issues.
1. Very sluggish to move from the 'The File Browser' page to the 'The playlist' page.
2. Quicktime on my system was installed fresh, as an up-to-date version as of today (QT 7.7.6) and rebooted before starting Max7 x86). Nevertheless, the 'The Playlist' page of the tour throws up the following warnings
>warning: Jitter thinks QT 7 is installed, but cannot load some QT 7 functions
>spigot~ and other QT 7 specific Jitter features will be disabled.
>check /WINDOWS/system32 for an out of date qtmlclient.dll, or try reinstalling QT
3. The 'The jit.playlist Object' page works, but throws up the following warnings
warning: Jitter needs QT 7.3 for OpenGL texture output
warning: Jitter needs QT 7.3 for OpenGL texture output
warning: Jitter needs QT 7.3 for OpenGL texture output
4. Hitting 'next' on the 'The jit.playlist Object' page, which should bring up the 'Pitch and Time Manipulation' page, crashes Max almost every time (Ive only got it to behave once in fact).
> Re: workspace restore, can you send along an email to support @ cycling74 dot com? Please send your Max 7 preferences so we can take a look.
Installing and running the 32bit version would appear to have resolved it for the 64-bit version, but if it does reoccur I will.
>We are still looking at ways of quitting more gracefully. Feel free to include this info in your email to support.
FWIW, both versions feel more sluggish to launch as well. There'll be a Max7 icon on the taskbar sat flagged as 'not responding' for a few seconds on startup, before any windows open up. Again, disconcerting.
I know this might be seen as nitpicking since its 'just' the Tour, but it does feel that this release of Max7 is a lot crankier on Windows than I remember of M6 and M5, and having the introductory demo of the new stuff throw up quite so many oddities (without even warning which stuff is not going to work on eg an x64 Windows) is a poor representation of Max7...
This is so! awesome!
Cycling74 thank you for this mayor leap in jitter-land.
Deferred shading, multiple render targets, subpasses, a new video engine and it is very performant as well!...
Wait, wait. I think I just fainted there for a bit.
Guys, this opens so many new possibilities you could simply not achieve in previeous Versions and puts Max back up on the radar. And you put in things like SSAO and DOF just for fun! Awesome!
Not to forget all the other great things like playlists, code snippets, easy pitch and time manipulation, and recovery from crashes! Whoo. (Well the last two things really remind me of Ableton and it is fantastic to find those feats back in Max7)
So, enough of the superlatives. I`ll go back, exploring.
But once again.. Thanks! Great work!
hey c74,
on win7 x64 i only checked in m4l for now. Many new things are very good but
- I can confirm that max is always starting with the "after crash" dialog even if it hasn't crashed
- I hope you got your reasons to remove the border from many ui objects, because that destroyed many device gui
- in a bigger patch (not huge) a patchcord end that is dragged has problems to follow the cursor, it's redrawing with max. 2 frames/s (the same thing works flawless in 6)
- dragging a patchcord above window limits is even worse, but this is the case since max6
- I can't believe that you replaced the wheel with another icon which can't be switched off
- I can't believe you don't offer a way to switch the toolbars off (comeon this is just implementing 2 additional options in preferences, my eyes are distracted by this)
- selecting the end of a patchcord is harder now (aim at 5x5 pixel dot next to the outlet/inlet dot)
It's like the release of 6: good changes at the core but unnecessary addition of eyecandy and design changes and forcing everyone to look at menus that many people never use. i'm interessted why things are not optional. O.
I know there are little triangles to hide the toolbars but it only changes the state for the current patcher.
it would make sense to have a global toolbar hidden state. O.
Amazing! This update is looking really good. The jitter playback in the New to Max 7 window is super smooth :D
No multi-touch support? Seriously, if Max is great to connect almost everything around you, why not let it use the features available right there on your machine?
That's very disappointing.
The new max7 works and looks(especially for max 4 lovers) like a cham ;)
But in continue to previous answer of Jeremy i want to ask also..
Is there any way to change the global color of an object (eg comment box letters) for a patcher already exists?
For example if i use a global grey color for background of max (selected from object defaults) then
i cannot see clearly the grey letters inside comment boxes when i open max help files..
Is there any way to overide this and change the global color for the letters of comment boxes
(or i must apply a style every time i open a max help file)?
Epatrico, it do's have it, its called a tablet and Mira.
Works like a charm, loaded up 20 older huge patches and not one crash or bug !
sweeeet !
I get the impression some people are having a difficult time with the color schemes. My recommendation for Cycling74 is to package some more color schemes with high contrast in the 7.1 update. Personally I'm fine with it all but it may help others.
Hi @andro
Thanks for the comment. Yes, I know Mira. It's great, sweet indeed. I've used it for an installation last year in two different opportunities.
But that's not the same. I don't own an iPad, I don't want to buy one and it's a separate device. I don't need to hook up something else to my computer if I have a great FHD multi-touch screen on my laptop.
Hi all!
Impressive new upgrade!Love it! I'm just a little bit disappointed that the remainder operator of expr and vexpr objects weren't updated to allow floats. :(
Already notified Cycling along time ago.
@zachary - click 'no'. Does that fix it?
No, that doesn't fix anything. I try to cover my bases minimally before posting ;)
I've rebooted my machine, deleted files in ~/Library/Application Support/Cycling '74/Max7, reinstalled Max7. No luck. Anyone at Cycling have advice?
best,
Zachary
On Win7 64 bit I stopped the crash messages on open by disabling "restore windows on launch" in preferences.
is there a place where download
Max 7 documentation
so can be read off line ?
Where can I find a list of the all the new objects introduced with Max 7?
@Alexg This may be the most direct list of changes although while reading it, it's unclear as to what's a new object or just updated object.
@ESTEVANCARLOS Thank you, but I see, for example, that the new typeroute~ object is not listed there.
Well, first thank you very much for releasing Max 7. I did purchase it, because I wanted to see if it would help with the crashes when changing inlets and outlets in gen~, about which I am sure cycling74 is well aware, and the demo did not allow gen~ editing. Once I got an error message catching the problem, but for the other few dozen times Max7 crashed in the last couple days, it neither caught the error nor restored the work. And, for some reason, when deleting an inlet without causing a crash, which does happen occasionally, it seems to remove inlet 2 rather than the last inlet, but then attempting to change the inlet connections, it then crashes unrecoverably anyway. If it doesn't crash, and one does something inside a codebox that the compiler doesn't like, instead it disconnects all the inlets and outlets without a warning message, and when zoomed in on the codebox I cant see all the inlets and outlets, so I don't notice the disconnections for some time and think I did something else wrong in the code and puzzle why it's not working like I expect, until I finally notice the codebox disconnected itself again. I have tried not to complain, because I know you folks are very busy with many other issues, but at some point in the last few hundred crashes and disconnections I kind of lost patience with it, apologies. In Max, when one deletes an inlet it shifts all the other connections to the left, and it always provides a console warning when it changes the I/O for any reason. I very much wish ten~ did the same thing.
Mostly I like the new UI. At first I missed the pictures of UI objects and discovered I never learned the names of some of them. I also miss the object subcategories. Neither of those were big concerns.
But I have a lot of trouble moving wires in both max and gen~. I have to zoom in at least twice to pick up the end of a wire at all. Then it tries to guess where I am going to connect it too quickly for me. It was much easier in Max 6. I am sure it is a fine tuning issue, and I can certainly live with it for a while, but maybe others would prefer it you kept the new interactivity, and it seems worth asking.
Personally I would be very grateful indeed if you could please fix the gen~ crashes, but the UI is new and its usability affects more people, so I understand if you can't get to fixing the gen~ crashes for a while, and thank you very much for the new version.
I'd like to invite anyone experiencing any malfunctions with Max 7 to visit our support page and submit a report. https://cycling74.com/contact-support/ We won't be responding to this thread with technical support answers, so if you have reported something here, I encourage you to follow up with support as well. Any information you provide helps us improve the next updates of Max 7.
Regarding playlist~: Nice new tool. It would be great if one loads multiple files and select them with an integer to the input if the selected file would move to the top of he list. Then one could make the object as small as one file image and always see the one that is selected. Please see attached image.
Best
Hans Peter
Hi,
I really love the new layout of Max7.
However, when I tried to run the patch I created from Max6 with a bluetooth microphone and speaker in my OSX 10.10, it crashes almost 9 out of 10 times.
May I ask if there is a reason or solution to that please?
Thanks for the new Max7!
Cheers,
Karen
