Max 8.0.0 Released!
It is with great pleasure that we are announcing the official release of Max 8.0.0. Before we share it elsewhere, we want to make sure that our Forum users hear it first!
All of us at Cycling '74 are incredibly proud of the work that went into this release, and we are so excited to see what people make with it.

Mac users, please note that both Max 7 and Max 8 show up as “Max” in your applications folder. This means if you have Max 7 installed and go to install Max 8, you will be asked if you want to write over the previous version. If you want both installed, change the name of Max 7 application from “Max” to “Max 7”.
This is not an issue for Windows users, where the app will install in a separate folder.
Also, in our limited testing, Max 8 installs and runs on Apple's latest OS, Mojave (Mac OS 10.14).
Woo hoo! Great work C74!
Woop! Congrats!
Yasssss!! Amazing work!!
good work, everyone!
purchased. This looks absolutely astounding.
I'll try and keep list of comments here:
Bugs/issues:
• not to be nitpicky but shouldn't dial.pan mode indicator color extend from the middle point of the dial?

• Promo material: The cellblock object can monitor audio signals. There doesn't seem to be a cellblock object. What is this?
• Exmaples: Pulsar by Overlap-Add should have default values so it doesn't click at 1 hz or whatever.
• Examples->Resources seems kinda ugly.
• gen help patcher is F'd up. - Thanks ben
• "probe" yields nothing in documentation search
Comments
• Any node examples?
• Love the browser example!
• I was supposed to fix climate change and fight fascism but instead I spent a year obsessed with Max 8
• JSUI Mapping? Are there JS functions for this?
• Audio stuff in the Gen(no tilde )is incredibly slick! slide, is gonna be gnarly • My • examples are back!

default to snap to grid?
Will I be able to use it as a subscription user?
@AUDIOMATT Thanks for noticing the gen help patcher funkiness, we will get that fixed up!
Thanks a lot! Great work!
Any news on when the SDK will be released? Can't wait to fiddle with the new MC feature under the hood!
Damn you guys for finally putting in a VST scanner. I built my own! It took forever! And did some crazy stuff with [shell] and a symbiotic app to handle the actual scanning, to avoid crashes. Now I ge to wipe out all that hard work! :P
@MARTIN Yes! All subscribers should have immediate access to Max8. Just login with your account from the User Account and Licenses window and you should see your license.
I have a Cycling '74 Max 7 Perpetual License - am I covered for Max8?
Great work C74. Grats on the release!
Bugs/issues:
There is a COMMENT TEXT problem with "gen help, no gen~" (Windows... Mac: ok)
mc.funnel~ mc.spray~ (no such object in Win)
This dont work: (unicode etc) ❤ ☀ ☆ ☂ ☻ ♞ ☯ ☭ ☢ € 中國哲學書電子化計劃
"Code export is subject to change in future updates." ....
Examples overview... looks weird.
the cyan text over white background in the forum... c'mon
@arabram,
mc.funnel~ mc.spray~ (no such object in Win) confirmed in max.
Awesome release! Gonna test it out soon!
The mc.funnel~ and mc.spray~ objects were early aliases to mc.pack~ and mc.unpack~ that were meant to be removed. Looks like we didn't remove all references in the final culling.
@AUDIOMATT Some answers to your comments:
dial pan mode - interesting idea, seems like YANDM (yet another dial mode) though :)
cellblock == jit.cellblock
pulsar ola example - fixed!
'probe' should reveal a number of things in the dropdown in the Doc browser, but I'm seeing problems with the results page. Will look into it!
Node examples can be found by going to Extras->n4m.launcher
No initial support for Mapping in JS, but it's on our radar...
@STEVEN BRENNER - The Max7 Perpetual License is a full Max7 license. It does not cover Max8 but is eligible for the upgrade price.
@STEVEN BRENNER After being a subscriber for more than a year ... I purchase Max 7 in middle of June 2017...
It was nice a few months later to know that this version would no longer receive so much attention from Cycling and that it would not receive an automatic upgrade to Max 8 (but those that bought only a few months later).
From my point of view and knowing that we do not all live in the same country and the same reality it would have been nice for Cyling to give a clue about this before buying ...
A little later the sale to Ableton and the change in the license of gen ...
These years were not very friendly with the new user ..
@Ben, Holy butt sprockets, jit.cellblock has an audio in!
It is very fine, but the midi pickup is not working correctly
@ Arabrab My confusion was over the wording on web page when I bought in and the term 'perpetual'. I took free future updates to mean updates to the software not just free updates within a version. Maybe I missed something in the fine print that clarified things.
Max8!!! Finally!!! Yaaaaa!
Ich bin sehr gespannt!
@ben
message box is F'd up. Steps to reproduce:
1) Make a message box with the text "subvoice 20" (no quotes)
2) double click on the word "subvoice" to select it and try and retype the word "sorted" into it.
@AUDIOMATT
This appears to work here ok, but maybe there is something else in your patch preventing the typing? Perhaps a battle with autocomplete, or?
Wait. Def autofill but it's ugly behavior. Also it's a bit more complicated:
Steps to reproduce:
0) New Patch
1) Key M, make new message
2) Key M make second new message
3) Type in "subvoice 20" no quotes
4) While the blinking cursor is still in the message box, double click the word subvoice to highlight it
5) Attempt two type the same word, "subvoice" in.
I get "subvoicergs 20"
hi all :)
launching max8, on mac"el capitan" , doesn't show max8 icon in the dock,
but max7's .
trying to click'ndrag max8 to it,
only moves max7's icon to the pointed place,
and still, nomax8 icon.
am i the only one to get this ?
no pain with that,
i'll try my first patch in 1 minute :)
i have renamed max7 "max7" ,
and max8 "max8" ,
instead of "Max" for both...
Congrats!!! What a great update!
BTW strange thing with RPN objects - it seems you have to instantiate an NRPN one before they can be found.
@KLSDIZ Thanks for the catch, we will fix those up ASAP. In the meantime, if you create an [nrpnin] and [nrpnout] objects first, the rpnin/rpnout objects should work.
Greeeeaaat job to the team, for the biggest updates of course — mc is just... WOW — but also for the tiniest details (you had me at shift and drag to insert an object, then I discovered even line now deals with multi-segment syntax now, after so many years ! :D).
I have a little question though : what about a shortcut to group-ungroup objects? Right now right click or going to the menu seems a bit long for something that could be so useful in so many situations. Also, just to bother you with the smallest detail possible : why can't we drag grouped objects by clicking cords? :D
Nice and amazing!
Btw, I came across a picky little problem.
If I open Max as a standalone, it says, I have to Authorize it.
On the Auth. page, it says, I can use Max 8 only with Ableton Live, and gen works only in Max 7, so I wasn't able to save my patch until I start Live.
My problem is that I run Max only in my office computer (spare time software :D).
I just wanted to wish you all congratulations!
Amazing update. I like the gen object for max events!
A minor bug I met: when in a maxhelp patcher, left clicking the "?" at the right corner of tab row will make the dropdown menu disappear quickly. You need to right click it. Hope this will be fixed in next version.
Congrats to the C74 team. Looking forward to test the gen for events!
@KONSTANTIN KAZANCEV what do you mean by MIDI pickup?
That looks fantastic!
Regarding running Max 8 alongside with Max 7:
When (on Mac) I rename the Max 7 app to run it alongside Max 8 I am likely to run into conflicts because the two share some resources (like preferences and others)? Is it safe to do that on a production/performance computer that I will continue to use for a while to perform with Max 7 as well? Or better testing on an other machine first?
@JAN it's safe, the two installs are completely isolated from one another
@JEREMY Superb!!!! Downloading now! :)
Yes! Bought and grabbing it now.
There is some mess in the gen helpfile. Some grey text appears behind the main text. It appears in each tab.
To celebrate first thing I launched it eight times (in under half a minute).
This opens new perspectives!
@jvkr: your example doesnt work in Max/FTS.
@roman must be a localization issue, are you running nextstep in German?
@BEN BRACKEN, @JEREMY (or who knows about it...)
I am looking into the new MC Wrapper world and was wondering how the multiple instances/audio streams are handled. Are they all running within the same thread or is MC Wrapper multi-threaded? A quick look at the CPU monitors when running the mc.target~ help patch (tab polyphony) seems to suggest, that they are multi-threaded.
As ask because there obviously a lot of use cases where MC Wrapper may replace poly ~.
All MC objects are single threaded (with the exception of mc.poly~ @parallel 1. The thread synchronization overhead to do the parallel processing and join on a per object basis would likely be prohibitively expensive, except perhaps at very large vector sizes.
Thanks for the insight, Joshua!
@JCC:
When people say computers don't need to get any faster, I just think of the phrase "Vector Sizes"
Does a Max 7 subscription license cover Max 8 on the same machine? In other words can I run both on one subscription license? I don't want to trash my Max 7 just yet as I want to make sure my old patches will still run smoothly.
Found the answer: https://cycling74.com/forums/max-8-along-7/
wow
lots of exciting new features (and bugfixes ;) )
but... i need a new computer :D ;( and money ;(
ps : in the list of bugfixes i see
"poly~ crash with no arguments"
has it been fixed, as in, now it WILL crash with no arguments as it was always intended ?? :D
also there has been a bugfix on lcd (lcd: getsize reports correct value) but wasn't this object deprecated ?
The "objects into and out of patch cords in one step" is such a simple but huge feature! Love it, it makes patching such fast. Amazing!
thanks for all the work!
Will there be a list of methods available for each new mc. object?
Like: deviate is great but everytime i have to guess whether is going or not going to work with that specific object
Can I ask a somewhat lazy and general question? Are there any issues with backwards-compatibility of patches (Max 8 - Max 7)? From a couple of quick tests and memory of previous upgrades I don't think there are (presumably as long as Max 8-specific objects aren't used), but I just wanted to check if there was anything to watch out for before we go upgrade-crazy.
A few weird things I noticed :
- levelmeter~ output in control just gives a big number and not the expected value I get in Max 7
- line (control version) is great because now it can deal with multi segment messages,
but there is a weird thing. For values between 0 and 1 (even if there is no float argument in the box) the interpolation is made in floats, which is not a behaviour I always want. Normally there should not be anything between 0 and 1 in that case...
And what I already mentioned, but I think I'm the only one who made this request : why not add a short for group / ungroup objects?
Thanks !
J.
Salut Julien ! [line] has been revamped: it does not behave exactly as in Max 7, although it does in most cases. What you describe is expected behavior (see new Help file, tab compatibility). If you toggle the "Compatibility Mode" on, you will get back to the old behavior.
oh you're right I didn't see that, merci Jean-François !
Congrats!! Max8 is awesome.
On my machine, it is significantly faster than Max7, especially UI and video stuff.
I just started using Vizzie and it's great now. I'm also a big fan of the new color selection in the inspector. We'll make our patches sexier now.
Any idea when docs.cycling74.com will be updated with 8? Would be great for those times when you can’t open a laptop.
@andrew Definitely! Unsure of the exact schedule, but updating the web docs is definitely on the docket!
good to know, thanks ben :)
somebody just asked me for the jitter installer.
website, older downloads, reads:
Mac OS 9
Jitter 1.1.1 documentation only (17.3 MB) Released 8/01/03. For Mac OS 9.
Jitter 1.1.1 documentation only (17.3 MB) Released 8/01/03. For Mac OS 9
I've noticed, that meter~ doesn't show any signal in Mira but on the computer screen it does. Anyone else?
I would like to upgrade from max 7 to max 8, but can't find my serial number. Where is it?
Sorry for my last post, I noticed there is no serial number required, as long as I'm logged in into my account, while purchasing max 8.
Downloaded Max 8 and dropped it in Applications. It replaced my Max 7 app, ok, no biggie. But when I open it, it still uses the old Max 7 icon. Weird.
