Max 8.3.1 crashing while rebuilding database ??

Working on a Macbook. Catalina 10.15.7
I don’t know what happened, but out of nothing, Max changed from working flawless to a total disaster.
At a point , Max 8.3.0 crashed & couldn’t be re-opened / started up anymore.. “not responding”

I then read what to do on the forum:
I trashed the; ~/Library/Application Support/ Cycling74 folder
and installed the 8.3.1 update
( I still have the previous maxversions in my applicationfolder, is that a problem?)

Now, I can open max 8.3.1 , it starts up, I can play patchers, for a bit, but it keeps crashing after about 10 minutes
it seems stuck in rebuilding the Database, for 12 hours at least now.
At certain moments the file browser shows an icon that says the rebuildingprocess is at 99%

I'm honestly a little hesitant to update my OSX or do a clean Max install.

Anyone else experienced these issues?
Thanks

what do you mean by clean max install ?
there is no such thing on Mac.

if you suffer from database rebuild than either max has no proper rights to read or write or something is corrupt in places that max scans to rebuild the database.
any place that is set in max search paths in addition to packages , documents ...
You must check that.
If you can't find better solution, than compress sqlite.mxo in max extensions folder
and trash the original.
Max will not use any database, but will post some nonesense errors
in the max console, and will refuse to quit properly,
which can be done by force quitting it , for example using apple script app.
do shell script "killall Max"
As I don't want any databasing on my mac I use max exactly like this all the time.

clean install.....yes ..maybe not the right way to put it......i meant throwing out all folders, docs and everything related to Max on my HD, and start with a clean slate..

thanks..i will give these directions a try !
