Max and Windows
I'm in a Max class at school, the teacher uses a Mac and the school lets you borrow Macs so a lot of students use them but I bring my surface pro to class. I notice how there seem to be quite a bit of things that just don't work correctly on my computer while the teacher and other students on the Macbooks have no issues. Is it really a windows thing? I know there are jit.movie issues with the 64 bit version so I'm using the 32 version. Specifically I have a patch that uses motion detection to switch between 2 videos and the videos only seem to stay on if there's constant motion on the camera. Definitely not supposed to work like this. It's a patch the teacher provided and all I did was put my own videos so there's nothing different.
Chris,
MaxMSP/Jitter is fully functional on Windows and OSX. No operating system is "better" for Max.
Regarding the example patches you mention, it's possible that they were never tested on a Windows machine, or that the hardware (for example, the camera) is sending somewhat different data into Max.
This is frustrating and sometimes comes up even in the example patches and tutorials that come with Max.
Feel free to post here with any more questions.
hey
by experience, it's indeed easier to have a lean max working on a macbook, in a classroom context. This is mainly because nearly every windows hardware is different, and some objects don't work exactly the same, and teachers wil often use mac. Also, often windows laptops (especially a surface) are not as powerful as a macbook, which can come into play. It means you could experience several minor issues. But they are minor issues, keep that in mind. Sometimes it's hard to debug by yourself when you are a student, especially since your teacher may have less experience with windows than mac.
All in all, there should be nothing really "game-breaking". Remember also to update the max application when a new update comes out.
However...
" I have a patch that uses motion detection to switch between 2 videos and the videos only seem to stay on if there’s constant motion on the camera "
this seems... normal ? maybe ?
