Max compatibility with MacOS 11 Big Sur

Hello,

I would like to know if Max 7 and earlier are compatible with MacOS 11 Big Sur. I suspect not, but it is sometimes useful to be able to run earlier versions.

Max 8.18 is running great so far :-)

Thanks in advance,
Benjamin

Hello again,

Ok, I found the answer ("No") by poking around a bit more. Here are the details, in case anyone else is wondering:

Max 7 : Mac OS X 10.7 - 10.14
Max 6 : OS X 10.5 - 10.11
Max 5 : OS X 10.4.11 - 10.7.1
Max 4 : OS X 10.3.9 - 10.4.11 (10.4 recommended)

I took delivery of an M1 Mac Mini last week. Max 8.1.8 is running without difficulty under Big Sur in emulation. I believe Cycling is suggesting late 2021 for a Big Sur-native release.

I regularly run Max 6 on 10.14.6 Mojave for some older patches, Max 6 : OS X 10.5 - 10.11 is just the recommended platform as I understand it.

Does anyone run Max 6 and/or 7 successfully on Big Sur?

Any update on this? Still not working!

There are no plans to update Max 7 to support Big Sur, as all Max 7 development has ceased.

A quick local test of Max 7.3.6 demonstrates a crash on launch under Big Sur.

We would recommend you use Max 8 or higher, and note that Max 8.2 will run natively on M1 processors, but will require any third party externals to be updated to run natively (otherwise it will also run well under Rosetta).

If you need to load Max 7 and you must run Big Sur on your machine, you may be able to run an older version of MacOS under a VM such as Parallels or VMWare, but there is no guarantee that will work properly either.

Good Luck!

Wow, just had the misfortune to have to change Macs as the old one died and can't run my Max 7 anymore.

I don't mind upgrading but obviously there is always the worry that max 9 is round the corner and I'm gonna waste money on an old version of Max.

Or just stop using Max I guess and go back to PD.

You already decided to move forward with the new mac. And that's the main decision. Any upgrade to the newest Max will likely, as always as I remember it, allow recent purchasers of the older software an upgrade . 1, 2, 3... go

I didn't decide, my old Mac went wrong, it stopped working. I did not decide for this to happen, why would I?

Did you actually read what I said?

I also have to say, of all the software I had on my "old Mac" the only one not working is Max/Msp.

Everything else fine, also looks like probably all they have to do to get max 7 working is to use a more recent version of Juce, can't be bothered to recompile though.

PD it is, you have helped me make my decision, thanks.

Hi, I don't know anything about your work Bob. But as a visual music artist - using both audio and jitter together, Max 8xx is by far the best version yet. It takes on and solves so many new developments. I don't work for c74. Just trying to help you.

PS: Try to stay happy.

PD is very weak compared to Max (otherwise everyone would be using it!)

one day a crossbreed of max and pd will be available.

it will have fexpr~ AND live.scope~, and then you can finally create something with it.

and then i need this, and then i need that, and then finally there wil be another excuse why we dont do what we planned and make some music or software.

Sorry for snapping at you Bob, I was pissed off and had had a few beers. I Apologise.

No prob. Technology can be a painful business for the user :)

I never switched to PD for the same reason I never switched to a PC - I’m too lazy to learn and pay for everything all over again. I’ve seen Miller run PD at a couple of conferences and it looks amazing - however that’s also because it’s Miller!

Well it seems PD is a pain in the backside on Big Sur as well, along with lots of other things. Progress eh!

Interestingly the Max 7 patches that I exported as apps all work, it is just the main Max App that is crashing.

Max is on sale now so I guess I will just have to pay :(

you won’t regret Max 2.0 bob - especially if you use jitter… ;)
