Max crashes if you use 'clocksource rewire' and load a VST with vst~
Hello,
I am using the trial version of Max to see if it will work for me.
I am on Windows 7. I am using Max 7 64 bit. I am using Reaper 64 bit.
Steps:
1) Max is using ad_rewire
2) Send the message 'clocksource rewire' to the transport.
3) Load a VST in vst~
4) Max crashes
I am worrying that maybe Max won't work if I can't get the transport to sync to Rewire and use VST's.
Thanks for your considerations,
Bzihrla
Can anyone confirm this? Please, I really want to use Max but I am completely stuck due to the crash.
Doesn't crash here, on a Mac using Max 7.0.5. Sorry couldn't be of more help.
Hello Dan,
Thanks for your response! Glad to hear it's working for someone!
Maybe I can narrow this down somehow?
Do you use 64 or 32 bit Max?
Is your host 64 or 32 bit?
What host are you rewired to?
Is Max rewired as slave?
Do your settings significantly differ from these?
Driver: ad_rewire
Midi Ports: 16
Sample Rate: 44100
I/O Vector Size: 64
Signal Vector Size: 64
Scheduler in Overdrive: Yes
Audio Interrupt: Yes
I/O Mappings: All 16 channels are mapped.
Thanks
- I'm using Max 7.0.5 in 32 bit mode.
- I'm on a Mac running 10.9.5
- ReWired to Ableton Live Suite 9.2
- By definition when using ad_rewire, Max is a slave to the other ReWire application. To do the opposite, you use the rewire~ object, which is NOT what I'm doing.
My settings are the same as yours except I only have 1 Midi Port, Audio Interrupt is OFF, and I only have two MIDI output channels (truth be told, I'm on my work computer, and don't even have a MIDI interface connected to this Mac).
I'm sorry but can anybody please help with this? I am completely stuck, I don't know what to do now. I reinstalled my whole OS and used a fresh install of Max & Reaper and I still have the same problem.
What about posting a crashlog?
And don't forget that you can easily contact Cycling support: https://cycling74.com/contact-support/
Bzihrla,
Both Max and Reaper will need to be running in the same architecture (32 or 64 bit) for ReWire to function properly.
My guess is that this is the cause of your crash.
Now please help me understand a few things.
1) Is the goal to have Reaper function as the ReWire controller, and Max as the client application? If so ad_rewire is the correct driver
2) Is the plugin you are attempting to use in vst~ compatible with whatever architecture (32 or 64 bit) you are running Max in?
3) describe your intended use of ReWire transport messages ("clocksource rewire") in Max
4) how are you attempting to get audio out from vst~
Ah, apologies Bzihrla,
I see you already said you are running both apps in 64 bit mode, so I am incorrect, that is not the cause of your crash!
I am still curious about the answers to questions 1, 3, and 4 from my post above.
In addition, please let me know whether Reaper is seeing "Max 7" as a ReWire device in its settings.
As I try this on my Windows machine with Cubase I think I am getting the same crash.
Interesting!
Thank you for pointing this out. I will take a closer look and post back here.
Bzihrla,
This looks like an issue for the C74 team to look at
Steps to reproduce:
Max 7.0.4+, Windows 7/8
1) Use the attached patch to establish a ReWire connection between a host application and Max
2) Check that vst~ hostphasor and hostsync~ are functioning as expected
3) send a "clocksource rewire" message to transport
the ReWire connection is lost. Eventually Max crashes.
Thanks for the report. We are aware of the problem and will take a look.

Hello Ben,
Has Max 7.1 resolved this issue?
Unfortunately I was never really able to give Max a proper evaluation because my demos expired before the issue has been fixed.
Please let me know, I would like to look into Max further if 7.1 isn't crashing on clocksync rewire when VST's are loaded.
hello guys,
Can anyone on 7.1 confirm if Max is still crashing from this bug?
Thank you so much
Hi,
I'm sorry to ask again but I really don't know what else to do.
I already reinstalled my machine over this problem. I had to "give up" for a while.
I've been waiting over 1 year just to be able to use Max without it crashing
Can anyone please, please, please let me know if Max is still crashing?
All I want for Christmas is a working version of Max that doesn't crash immediately
