max keeps crashing
Hello!
Max crashed while I was editing a .gendsp file within a patch. I noticed this happens often: if I try to edit a gen file while working on a patch containing it. Since I am aware of the problem and gotten used to it it's not a big deal. This time though Max won't open anymore, or it opens and then crashes right away. I have tried to reinstall it, restart the computer and all that. It still crashes.
I have a mackbook pro mid 2014
Please help!
Without more information that takes the common form (what version of Max? What platform? What version of the OS? How's Max configured?), we'd be playing 20 questions. More information will help folks give you better advice....
Sure:
Max 7.3.4 (64bits, but I tried 32 as well)
Mac OS Sierra
Vector size 128, overdrive on
I should add that I can launch max and before I even try to open anything it crashes...very strange. I think the gen~ files I mentioned have messed things up though I don't know how or why
I have followed the instructions deleting preferences and such. I even reinstalled the OS but Max still crashes. Any other suggestions?
reinstalling OS means nothing, if there were any corrupt files, like preferences,
they don't get replaced.
Are You sure You deleted ALL cycling stuff from user library ? which is hidden in osx ?
I deleted this folder
/Library/Application Support/Cycling 74
/Library/Application Support/ is main Library, NOT user library.
If Your user library is hidden, which it is by default, You have to make it visible
or find Your way there by this "go to" stuff.
If You want to make it permanently visible paste this in Apple script and run it:
do shell script "sudo chflags nohidden ~/Library/" with administrator privileges
I would rather find the folder and delete it via the terminal instead of making it visible using sudo. I have looked in what I thought was the user library but there is no cycling '74 folder.
Could you be a bit more specific about the location of the user library folder?
Maybe Max 7 does not store anything in user library, I don't know, I don't use sierra.
But living with OS without being able to look into own Libray folder is rediculous.
So leave it as is if You are afraid...
I looked through the terminal , ran your sudo command (which really didn't add anything but the visualization of the Library folder that can be achieved by pressing alt anyways) I also found the user library folder that you mentioned but there is no Cycling '74 (or related) folder'
Now I am trying to install max 7.2.5 to see if the problem persists
But now to Your problem.
Deleting Max preferences, databases, and all other leftovers, would
help in case some of that causes trouble.
But maybe Your patch is corrupt, and max tries to reload it on startup
(another stupid thing) and so crashes again and again.
I also found the user library folder that you mentioned but there is no Cycling '74 (or related) folder
Cycling '74 folder is in subfolder 'Application Support' of the user library.
@Broc
Yes, I have deleted that very folder, the other library folder in the system (not the one in the Users directory) is the one I was referring before (with no Application Support subfolder in it)
@Source
Unfortunately it is not the patch that is corrupt since I launch max without opening anything and after a minute or two that is open it crashes. It is really bizarre
Maybe the problem is with something else, like audio driver,
or maybe You have a Plugin that crashes Max when it starts building the database,
or who knows what, there are tons of possible reason why that happens.
If You start Max by doubleclicking the executable, instead of max app itself,
it will open via terminal and You would be able to see any error messages.
To do so, right click Max.app, show package contents, in Contens/MacOS Folder, doubleclick Max

Thanks for the advice. Seems like many things are wrong... Not sure how to fix them
I would remove all post installed packages, Max SDK, simply everything, and start with
plain max installation, but that is not an easy task I guess.
Reading the terminal output can maybe help You,
what are all this expired sessions, shared history ?
I thought You deleted all Max related cache, and leftovers.
Sorry not to offer better help, but if Max is important to You, erase the whole system, Install it fresh, as well as max without any packages or extras, and see how it goes.
Ok I will do my best, in the meantime thank you very much for all your help!
as suggested in the link above, if deleting prefs is not working, please get in touch with support.
I did thank you. I think all of this was caused by some serious bug in saving and loading gendsp files...
