MIDI Sync MAX Transport and Ableton

Hello,

At the risk of sounding stupid, or overlooking something fundamental. Is it possible to have this MAX transport provided on the forum transmit both to a sound card and Ableton. If I have midiout set to my sound card Ableton doesn't respond, and if I have set to my sound card Ableton doesn't respond. I tried adding another midiout, and transmitting to both, but then I get a checksum error. I think I've exhausted routing combinations in Ableton.
Alternatively, is there a way of adding a midiout object to the link clock source. Effectively combining the two patches?

link.clocksourceA.maxpat
Max Patch

Transport.maxpat
Max Patch

Thank you

what are you trying to sync ?

if you want to send beat clock from transport, divide raw ticks / 20

Hello,

Thanks both. I'll try out the provided illustration. I'm trying to sync the programmes and external equipment. The link clock source patcher above is from that package. I have found some work arounds with the link package.
Could I ask what guys think is the best DAW to use in conjunction with MAX for MIDI control? I have been using Reaper, but am coming up against some limitations, like being unable to slave it to MIDI beat clock. I'm looking at Digital Performer and Ableton. Any Thoughts?

Thank you

Digital Performer is what I use, and it can send both midi beat clock as well as midi time code.
I don't use Live and can't say much about it.

But does it not depend on what by sync you mean ?
if really midi only, you need beat clock and song position pointer.
You will let DAW be a master and run midi devices as slaves I guess.

Hello,

OK. Thanks for the message. I was having the software slaved to the devices, also. I guess the thing that was pulling me toward Ableton was that there seemed to be a lot of resources. But maybe I haven't looked hard enough for DP information.

Cheers

Hello,

Sorry, not sure if you're still there. In terms of using MAX transport with DP. I can get it working if MAX if going MIDIOUT from MAX 1, but not if I go MIDIOUT to my sound card. Are you able to achieve master/ slave relationship between the two programmes if MIDIOUT goes to the sound card. I have DP set to recieive sync information from the sound card, but I can't seem to get it working. Is it possible to achieve master/slave between MAX, DP and external equipment?

Thank you

You are using mac, so you also have IAC bus.
That is prefered midi between applications,
forget this "from to Max" , because they do NOT exist before max is running,
and so no real preferences for midi devices can be set in a DAW.

I will repeat, Performer should be Master, because it will be playing digital audio.
But sure, you can set it as slave too.

Performer can receive clock from Max, slave to it and
echo received clock to different midi device.
Max can also do that, and also echo clock from performer to other midi destination.

You need to implement song position pointer in Max, to follow midi
start, continue, resume, jump, loop etc.

P.S, Performer can also send clock to multiple midi devices

Hello,

OK, thanks. I'll look into it.
