Multi channel output

Sorry, I am a beginner at audio hardware. I would like to use MaxMSP to generate independent sounds to an array of 3*3 speakers. I have a MacBook Pro, and realise I will need some external hardware to get 9 channel output. There is a bewildering amount of stuff out there. Can anyone please suggest a straightforward solution? Thank you.

Soundcard 1st. I use the presonus firestudio project card. 10 outputs. Super solid.
You can then turn on as many inputs as needed with max.
Route each audio channel to its respective output.

Thanks very much Andro. I have ordered the soundcard along with the connectors from Thunderbolt to Firewire.

Thanks Andro. And do you or anyone have any advice for a multichannel amp/speaker system to link to this?

The best way is to work with a set of active loudspeakers/monitors. Prices and quality vary a lot. In the lower price range i like the KRK Rokit series. On the upper end the is i.e. Genelec. (More expensive but a lifetime investment).
I'd recommend going to a good store and doing some listening tests. After all it all depends on what you want to do, ropm size that needs to be covered and if course your personal taste.
