.mxo not opening in Max.

Hey folks,

I'm relatively new to max/MSP and I'm having an issue regarding a couple of .mxo's that won't open!

I've downloaded Bark~ and Beat~ from this site: http://web.media.mit.edu/~tristan/maxmsp.html. But neither will open when I double click the downloaded .mxo's. I've tried dragging them on to a new patcher and it just crashes max.

I'm running Max6.1.9 (32bit) on OSX Yosemite 10.10.2.
Computer: Macbook pro retina (late 2013) 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5

I noticed there were previous threads from 2007 that said a remedy was to download the combo updater, which I have done and it hasn't worked. Also, in the README that came with the Bark~ and Beat~ download it stated that

'If running Mac OS 10.4.6 or later:
you must have vecLib.framework installed in your /System/Library/Frameworks'

I have checked and vecLib.framework is installed in the correct place but these .mxo's still won't open.

Anybody got any ideas?

Perhaps upgrading to max7 would fix this issue?

Hey Sam,
.mxo are not supposed to be opened. They are max objects, not patchers ; so they are used inside patchers. To use them, you must place an object in a folder that is recognized by Max (to do so, go in menu Options>File preferences>the cross in left down corner to add a new folder path). The, inside a patcher, you create an object with the name of your object just like any other max object/abstraction.

Hi Vichug,

Thank you for your reply! I followed your instructions and it worked for Beat~, but every time I try to open the object Bark~, max crashes. It shows up in the list of suggestions when I make a new object and start typing Bark~ though... So it knows it is there. I've tried setting up different file paths and that doesn't change anything.

Regards,
Sam

hey, i don't know, here i'm on the same OS as you and Max could instantiate the object without a crash. Hm by any chance wouldn't you have downloaded the os9 version of the external by error ? Or do you have something else named bark~ in your max search path perhaps (to check this, open a Max file browser and search for bark~) ?

Tried the search and the only Bark~ is the one I put there. I've also tried using a version that I know works on other computers and it didn't work on mine. I don't understand why beat~ is working... It's downloaded from the same place!
