No effect from VST:s and only "Audio input 2" is available

Hello total newbie here. I´m having trouble getting my VST:s to work. I tried with a few and always only get one input and no effect! (audio input 2).
I´m going thru the Tutorials , and "Electronic Music and sound design" by Alessandro Ciprini" I even bought some simple math books. If someone can help me with this basic problem I would very grateful.
Peter.

only input 2 seems like something which should not happen at all. what is the exact procedure you are performing?

this is a very simple patch, first i figured out a way to make a tremolo effect with pan2s/cycle object connected to a dac object.

then I inserted different VST:s after the pan2s object. But every VST only have two inputs, on the left, "Audio control input", on the right "Audio input 2" and no effect is audible.

I tried to learn this application a few years ago but gave up after a while. Now I have six months free from work/school and the last days I have reading and trying to grasp the basics. This time I wont give up., I come from a hardware modular background and that confuse me a bit. Max is modular with numbers. I have to get use to it.

thank you.

The left input is Control AND Audio 1. Try the helpfile, read the documentation.
But if it really doesn't work:
Reminds me of a problem I had with AU plugins not long ago, who kept acting as in bypass mode.
Solution was to trash all Max preferences (~/Library/Application Support/Cycling '74 - the whole folder).
One of the Max databases got corrupted, probably in a crash. You may even need to reinstall the Max application.

wow ok..yes exactly. Like they are bypassed. Ok I try a new-install.
thanks.

it's working great here
what kind of vst~ are you using?
yeah the left channel is labelled "Audio/Control" and is actually audio input 1 and controls

ok. did not know that.. I try again..

that labeling is really weird.

but for the future: it is always a safe bet that the audio inputs of an object start at the leftmost inlet(s). it is not a law or a technical must, but a convention, and you should follow this also when you make your own subpatches.

oh, and while it is okay to make use of the forums, it can be quicker to look into the helpfiles of objects. note that the helpfile for VST has various tabs in max 7. ;)
