Real-Time Distance sensor

Hi,
I am attempting to design a system that will receive information about how far a person is from two loudspeakers in a room in real time. The distance should be up to 20 feet if possible. Is anyone aware of a tool that will allow me this flexibility? Infrared sensors seem to be too short-distance. I have thought about using a kinect in the middle of the two speakers but not sure if its depth perception is accurate enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try MaxBotix ultrasonic sensors: https://www.maxbotix.com.

The Kinect v2 sensor (aka for XBox One) can identify people/joints up to 4.5 meters.
Simultaneously, the depthmap (pixels of xyz) can detect pixels up to 8 meters.
The resolution is in millimeters, with small variations due to human body movement and electrical/light noise.
Given that, you may be able to have the detection you want.
dp.kinect2 is an easy way to get all that data. Examples are included in the help file.
