restoring 10 year old max code

i am looking for help/advice on restoring an old max piece that no longer runs on contemporary computers.

i have a piece written in Max ca.2006 that would no longer run as a binary file. i have the source code but it would not open in max 7 or 8. the source code seems to be saved in the old .maxb format where the file is binary encoded and starts with "pmaxqv2". i don't know what version of max i used but i imagine it was max4 or max5. the max4 installer from https://cycling74.com/downloads/older does not work anymore on Os X 10.14

does anyone have any tips or ideas of what i could do to save the piece? i don't have access to old machine from around that era.

thanks

I have Max 4 running on a G4 PowerBook, I can try it for you if you like?

it should be compatible in most cases - i am using thousands of max4 files in max 6/7.

you can normally copy and paste max4 binary code into max 7, and opening a file from disk should also work.

what might not work is drag and drop or certain of these weird file browers.

what definetly does _not open are .mxb files in the extras menu, which, for an unknown reason, likes json only.

thanks for the replies (and hello),

i was able to find a machine with max5 that was able to open my old .mxb files and save to .maxpat text. now i just have to track down an intel compatible version of softvns... all the links here are broken
http://www.davidrokeby.com/softVNS.html

btw, @cycling74, it seems impossible to install a max4.x on an any intel-based mac (at least since 2009). the installer (e.g. max 4.6.3) runs ok but fails with a somewhat passive-aggressive tone:
"There were errors with the installation. You may try installing." and later "The installer could not install the software because there was no software found to install."

meanwhile, Max Runtime 4.6.3 installs fine but jitter 1.x needs a full max to install.

anyway, i imagine this is not a priority and it should not be (max8 ftw). the whole adventure just onset an introspection on preserving digital art and my youthful coding follies... but i digress, thanks for the tips, now that i can at least look at the code i might just end up rewriting it for gpu.
