Ryoji Ikeda - How Does He Do It?

The mind boggles with trying to understand how this man - along with his programmer, Tomonaga Tokuyama - create these audio-visual installations!

Im trying to gain some logical and intuitive advice of how the works are made possible. I presume with them being audio and visual then Max/MSP/Jitter is capable of tying both entities together and them being reactive of one and other.

Can anyone shed some light on any kinda of process they would deem Ryoji and Tomonaga would use/could of used to achieve such outcomes? or how such visual aesthetic could be achieved in the domains available in this software?
