So I'm a long time ableton live and max/msp user, but I've never used max4live - up until just recently I've only ever had the standard version of Live. I finally splashed out on the discounted live 11 suite upgrade (which includes 12) just before live 12 launch date.

What would be the best way of learning max4live, is there a specific tutorial pathway?

I think the embedded lessons in Ableton could be a good starting point, especially "Building Max Devices". Then if you open any of the devices in Max you'll understand the basic requirements to  create or edit a m4l device.

There's a good intro in the Volume 2 of Cipriani and Giri as well.
