Mathematically, there is no difference between integer and float. The display format is different and you can use that. Basically, convert each number to ASCII and look if the length of the resulting list is 1. If yes, it is an integer number.

I did not know this, although it is in the help file.

'int' and 'float' work here in Max 8. 'list' works only if the first list element is a number.

i´ve always thought that this is bad behaviour.

1. [route a] is able to route "a b c" the same way as [route 1] does it for "1 2 3"

2. lists in max either begin with numbers or with the symbol "list" 

3. from a user perspective both are of type list.

4. [route list] works for routing type for "1 2 3" but not for "list" followed by argument "a", "b", and "c" or symbol "a" followed by arguments "b" and "c".

so the only types [route] can not distinguish between are symbols with and without arguments: "hello", list "a b c" and symbol "a b c" have to share the last outlet. :)
