thank you for having me. (MAX & Eowave)

hello hello
my first post is a question ...sorry a bit rude maybe ..... but I am almost blind with tears of frustration.

heres a bit about what I do
I play the Kamelengoni (smaller version of the Kora - an African harp.) I use a looping system to catch live performance through mics which then becomes part of the groove. I use synths/ drum machines/etc to add to the mix...Its all outboard.
I bought an Eowave Ribbon Mk2 so that I could play samples in a more musical way and its something to wave about ...

Apparently I must download MAX so that I can edit it. The sounds it makes at the moment make me want to break it over my own head.

Is MAX really the only program that the ribbon editor works with?

incidentally if another Eowave VICTIM happens to read this....did you notice that the Eowave 2 editor software has gone missing from all the Eowave suggested locations.

I just got into Prettyscope and the whole Oscillator Art thing. They made that work so well - it just works out of the plastic supermarket carrier bag! Eowave would do well to copy that kind of attitude to user interface......
.
Im generally happy and constructive Honest. (just have an Edforol feeling coming on)
Blessings to all.
(except Eowave)

My suggestion would be that to contact the Eowave people directly.

The Editor Patch does not really work, whoever made it,
has no real clue about how to include extra stuff with the patch.
In this case it is javascript file midi_to_list.js
which anyway could be ommited and replaced with simpler stuff.
Also the patch is chaotic and unfinished.
Even worse - documentation includes no sysex or midi control
information, if I were doomed to use that thing I would try to extract
sysex messages from that patch and make own editor,
or complain at eowave to produce something usefull,
including documentation.

thanks Gregory! no phone number and they dont answer their emails....I have read both complaints on many forums.
thanks Source! I have read the same criticism of their "editor'

I got as far as the directory with the 'editor' but its just a file with a question mark and inside there is just text.....which I have NO idea what to do with.....

out of my depth..im just a musician who wanted a light-up midi controller....
....I guess I will crack it in the end but ....Bumbaclaaat!!!!

in the cold light of day I realise ithat The Eowave Ribbon is just a toy to plug into cv/gate modular systems to make whooshing noises......a rip-off.

I should really post a cartoon with me bent over being shafted with a baguette by Eowave inc.

Thankyou both for your help......
vive la france!

Are You using Max at all ?
That editor is maxpat and one should be able to open it with any max version, starting from 6, or even 5. Here is that missing java script file, just put it in same folder as the editor patcher, and see if You can get it to work.

midi_to_list.js.zip
application/zip 0.95 KB

You can download max 6 runtime if You otherwise don't use Max,
higher versions are too big and of no use for that purpose...
check download of older max versions.

Source....you are a mindreader! I downloaded ribbon mk1 controller (only d/lable editor I could find - was going to try and update with the ' up-date hex' ......quite honestly its like trying too translate Sumerian Cuneiform......thankyou....I'll get to it

marcus gogarty's icon

hello Source!
pasted your file into a new text window in max 6.1 (freshly downloaded) .....??????.......I just end up with an unresponsive ribbon 1 editor......I. have seen pictures of this thing working .....guess I''l just keep repeating steps until I lose the will to live....then I'll send it back.......I imagine that getting my money back will be even harder than getting this electric dog chew to function....
I really appreciate your help....such support got me through trying tp get an Edirol sound card to work with cubase on an Atari st back in 1996 .......this is the hardest thing since then........thanks man.

You are talking about ribon 1 editor ?
The download link was for ribon mk2 - is that the same ?
And there is nothing to paste into any window,
the js file should just reside in the same folder as editor patcher itself. Here are both:

Editor.zip
application/zip 11.00 KB

Just use open from the max menu and choose that maxpatch

Thanks again!
I had a response from Eowave...they told me to do exactly the same as you suggested and sent me the same file. they said it looks like a text file but that max runtime will open it and I will magically be staring at the editor.
the Ribbon2 editor maxpat.txt file remains a .txt file when opened with max.
no file with ribbon mentioned even looks like anything but a text file.
ribbon editor never shows up as a maxpat /patch or anything usable.
interestingly enough the ribbon shows up working nicely in the max runtime midi window.
think I will teach myself to write a new editor or at least get familiar enough with Max to know what should be happening.
I must say your helpful attitude and lack of irony or patronising is really appreciated....Eowave are rather 'SNITTY' they talk to me the way engineers talk to drummers.
cheers

dear Source, thanks....dont laugh.
turns out Petrol tank was empty, as it were. I just had to delete the .txt bit of 'the file' and then it became a full log emblazoned maxpat patch. silly really.
im glad I didn't slag off the actual Ribbon....once inside it can be set up a lot better than it comes...there is a grain synth setting with a little partials fader window.
your help took me here.
nice!

Glad to hear it works finally.
That problem with adding .txt extension to .maxpat
is browser adding whatever file extension to unknown filetype.
But also developer should have zipped it together with js file.
Otherwise one has to fight to get things running,
and we all have so many other things to cope with
than to solve such trivial mistakes.

abso-bloody-lutely!!!
well...I know that there is. market for a ribbon controller for musicians rather than modular scientists.....musicians aren't dumb...we would just rather be making music...as soon as we sit down.....so im going to start making them....soft pot+ arduino+bits of recycled wood + a bit of brass here and there/on board rechargeable battery/better synth.....straight out on a midi din socket/micro usb/and cv/gate stereo phono. hand tooled leather strap. £1800 thank you very much. More for custom programming of onboard synth as per genre.....
maybe.
I never had the manners to ask what you did apart from digital samaritanism.....

Doing own hardware stuff is lot's of fun,
but selling it is not allways.
Things get broke, materials one gets today are getting worse
and worse, people update computers without real need and than beg for updates.
I sold quite a few hard/software solutions to musicians,
and also other kind of stuff over years, starting from mid - end 80'ties.
This might as well throw a bit of light on my less important preocupations,
other than being ironical.
Providing support and mending, updating products is more of a
problem than to invent and produce them.

I hadn't thought about the customer element. yes, thats put me off the whole idea, customers....
just your brief description of how it is opened a great cellar door down to the depths of tribulation and folly and wailing and the gnashing of teeth and what sounded like evil laughter. I shut that door and will never open it again! I can still smell the brimstone.
