Before I go down the rabbit hole. Is this possible (noob)
What I would like to build is as follows.
I'm a big fan of using 128's for most things using lives sampler. My idea is to have a max device that allows me to scroll through 128 X 4 midi files.
For instance I have a ton of kick, snare, hat, perc midi files. Let's say I have 128 of each. I would love to be able to drop them all on there on respective section. This would allow me to scroll through a ton of midi files to creat a bunch of different drum patterns that I have already created. It would be hundreds of thousands of options. Is this possible. And how would I start. And if someone likes the idea and wants to build it all the better:)
Cheers

Whilst I am sure what you are suggesting is completely possible within Max wouldn't it be a whole lot easier just to set up a few MIDI tracks and some routing within Live? I know that amounts to heresy on the cycling forum but it does seem a much simpler solution if you're going to be using Live anyway. Unless I'm missing something?
What does reason have to do with rabbit holes?! Just do it. :)
Until then... what you want to do is really easy in Max. With just a few objects, you can drag and drop a folder and load all of the file names into a menu. Then you connect the menu to whatever is reading the files. Voila! Rabbit stew.
Haha true I was just being pragmatic given that Live has all the launch quantisation options and follow actions you could wish for really. Doing it in Max does have its own advantages though, it will just be a fair bit of work to get all the features Live offers (if you want them).
I understand all the routing options and clip launch in live. I'm thinking more about slimming the process down. Instead of having 4 channels each with 128 midi files and 4 drum racks it would be 1 channel with 1 drum rack and 512 midi channels
Metamax I will check out the attached
Thanks for all your input
Right I think I must have misunderstood you then? I was imagining having five midi tracks four with all your clips in (one for each of the parts you mentioned) that are then routed to your fifth track with your drum racks/instruments in.
Heh no sweat
Okay Im Back, i moved and just now have time to revisit this.
Metamax, when you say connect the menu to what ever is reading the files. What does that mean? the drum rack?
i tried following the lessons to finish this up, but my brain just cant wrap itself around it.
thanks,
and im sure your answer will only create more questions
"whatever is reading the files" means which max object you are reading the midi files with. there are several which could be used here.
