hi, all, i am sure this question has been discussed here a lot, but time is passing etc. post snowden - post apple watch... etc Sorry, but i could'nt find an existing thread.

I am really frustrated making a decision to buy a new machine to play live a/v shows. as a musician i use max, radial, logic, amadeus and all sorts of other stuff. For live a/v shows I use a max patch using video loops and doing live processing. i have succeeded using a Mac Book Pro from 2009 until now but lately the machine goes down too much and has ruined some shows and now MAX7 does barely work at all. I own it already but it seems it kills my frame rate instantly.

Ok, a friend suggested to buy a new "gaming' machine called XMG p505, for its much faster performance as any mac laptop. 

I FEAR windows ... but I was thinking maybe i only use it for live MAX performances with visuals and otherwise boot a linux/Gnu OS for communication and internet.

Anyway, I am an apple slave since day one and all my software is apple, i would possible continue making studio production on apple.

i produce in studio and perform live with windows laptops since years.

With my first PC laptop i did 7 years of live gigs with intense cpu usage.

Windows 7 64 bit is rock solid and gave me zero problems in live gigs using my M4L patches and standalone Max ones.

But i have to admit that the majority if Max world still rely on Apple machines (the majority of 3rd party externals are Mac only and the developers often do not have the resources to compile on Windows, jitter quicktime related stuff is still not working on Windows 64 bit but only on Win 32 bit, etc.).

So i'd check if you are using some mac only externals in your patches before jumping on the Win side.

That said, nowadays Apple and PC laptops are perfectly on par if you choose the right PC machines ( look at top level HP Laptops as the Z-book series and Lenovo laptops, there are even several pro audio pc laptop dealers in USA and EU).

thanks, a friend mentioned that she went back after she switched to windows for better performance, cause she had so much troubles in live venues to connect to projectors, incompatibilities... do you perform in clubs ? like line check situations ?

i perform as a professional musician and regularly in clubs, festivals, theatres etc.

i did work sometimes with video projectors too and got zero problems.

if you know the OS you're using you can actually solve problems if there're any.

the key factor is to buy the right machine and do a clean install of the OS as soon as the machine arrives at home.
