Within Max Instrument device, I can easily receive MIDI note events of the track from Ableton by using midiin or notein object. How would you receive such MIDI note events within Max Audio Effect?

I am trying to trigger the function object which controls the amount of overdrive by 'note on' events.

'Usually' that's not possible - a Audio Effect tends to sit on a Audio Track where you don't have any MIDI access. That's why the M4L Audio effects only have a audio in/out pair..

Still, you can use send / receive - an elegant example of this is in the (free) Max 7 Pitch and Time Pack which you can find on the Ableton packs download page ->
