I'm really a newbie with Max Msp, but I want to learn. To complete a project, I am trying to understand better the AHSL color mode. As many, I wish to analyze color in a video to use either as frequencies, notes and sound trigger. I found this patcher in the help forums and I have questions about it to understand it better (and hopefully to be able to modify it on my own), but the person who made it hasn't visited since at least four years.

The patch determines not the mean of all colors in the video, but the amount of specific colors, which is really useful to me. What troubles me is that the AHSL range seems to be 360 for the hue, but the patch uses a jit.charmap that works with 256 points inputs. Has the AHSL been scaled to 256? (if so, I do not see it in the patch).

I also get stuck with 2 reds (0, 255). I'd much rather have only one (0), and then use the same multislider to show black and white (through the luminosity, first 10% -0 to 10%- as black, last 10% -90 to 100%- as white), and ideally one gray-ih (anything under 10% saturation).

I'm guessing I could use the a jit.charmap on the saturation and luminosity values, but I could not find -here nor on the web- and agreement as to a percentage of WHAT number does the % refers to. Especially since I've read that the % can go over 100%... by then I was completely lost. How do I scale it to 256? I miss the simplicity of RGB's 0-to-255...

Last but not least, I could not find what the "lut" means. The only 2 occurrences of jit.fill lut I've seen refer back to this specific patch; Cycling74's thesaurus wasn't of any help on "lut" alone either. If I'm to learn to modify this on my own, I'd better thoroughly understand the patch.
