Only looking for some directions to go in for this, seems like a good opportunity to broaden my studies. What I am looking to do is build a patch that can take in audio, calibrate to characterize the sound of the instrument's attack, and then trigger a bang for each time the attack is recognized in real time. My mind has been going down a few different routes, seeming to me that it resembles an envelope follower, and also thinking about how I could possibly use pfft (which I don't know much about yet) to capture and characterize the sound of the input.

I would imagine looking at the spectral information of the sound, you could play a few notes and find the characteristics of the attack.

For example if I have a guitar as an input, l would want it to be flexible enough to recognize the attack if it is snapped, slapped, plucked, or picked with distortion.

Could anyone point me in the direction of things to study for this? Any projects or advice you could point me towards?

I have, but maybe not to the extent that I should (I only used it in a simple application of recognizing snaps vs claps). I'll start incorporating some of that. Right now I'm playing with a multi band compressor to try to get it as close as possible to just isolating attack, so that in tandem with bonk could prove useful.
