I am working on a vosim waveform, which is a pulsetrain of N Sin^2 cycles. I was thinking of doing this in gen, so I can get sample accurate results that are bandlimited, but my understanding of all of this is still pretty introductory. I'm trying to start a sine wave output, and then terminate it after a certain number of cycles (currently being output to a poke~ object). How might I go about this?

The next challenge after that will be a stepwise attenuation of that waveform, but that will be easier once I at least get this length issue solved.

dont forget that if it is not for realtime generation but for poke/buffer/wave2d you can still cut the buffer afterwards (or you can just play from the buffer later only a certain amount of samples.)

you probably know how to the get the lenghts in milliseconds from the oscillator frequency and samplerate. :)

have you looked at Examples->gen->gen~.vosim ?

Thanks to both of you. And really, they had a vosim example in there all along!? I really want to go through it myself to learn more gen, but really good knowing that's there.

in my opinion - and if it is okay for you that the duration of the rests is limited to multiples of the cosine wavelenght - you could just put a simple volume envelope/LFO over the pulses, which will have a form like this: \_

if is it not too steep (i.e. like only 1-2 cosines per burst) its effect on the bandlimiting issue is quite minimal.

I've been picking apart the gen example, (ended up only copying it, but trying to make sense of it as I go). I can't figure out why I'm not getting a decay, I can only accomplish a reverse looking vosim wave. And something feels weird about amplifying it, then multiplying by 0.001? Also, I find it strange that the inc/dec of A is included, considering that the decay rate is more fundamental to vosim.

Now I feel like I have the vosim basics, but I'm still confused why that gen example ever included the multiplication by 0.001 and the clip, but what I have now at least resembles a vosim pulsetrain. Also running into some ambiguous language in the specs, the rate of the modulation for the delay (MF), is "the modulation rate expressed in the number of periods in which a complete modulation cycle has to be performed.". Not sure how I can convert that language into hz being passed into a cycle object...
