trouble upload/download standalones to online service Max 7.2.1 (not Max 6)
Has anyone had recent problems with sharing standalones with online services using Max 7 ?
(services like Dropbox or Google Drive) ?
I have had great difficulty this week, trying to share a very simple patch with my students when using Max 7 via either service.
But using Max 6 was fine. (My operating system is Mac OS X 10.10.5 (Yosemite)).
First I tried to upload my file with Max 7.2.1. The file was first compressed into a .zip file, then uploaded to Dropbox.
But when downloading it from Dropbox, I get an error that the file is "damaged and can't be opened" and should be moved to the Trash.
I tried the same procedure with Google Drive, and got the same error.
I tried putting the file inside a folder first and compressing the folder (wishful thinking!), but got the same result.
**But** when I tried the exact same procedure with Max 6, everything works fine.
What is the difference ? Is there some difference in how the creation of standalones should be handled in Max 7 that is different than Max 6 ?
Is that difference enough to cause this problem ?
Or is this a bug ?
Would love to get some help on this if anyone else has any answers..
Thanks!
It is probably because you are not a registered apple developer, to have the downloaded standalone app run on your mac, you need to turn off the gatekeeper, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General, and select allow app downloaded from -> anywhere
to share patches with students, i would recommend using the "consolidate" and "snapshot" features of Projects.
search the reference browser for "Working With Projects" for more info.
Thanks both of you.
Rob-- I made a project, tried versions using Snapshot and Consolidate-- which is this case was not needed, it is a very simple patch (i.e. no externals, just core stuff)? It is literally just a few cycle~ objects.. Nothing worked. But please see below because the solution brings up another issue..
Octal's solution was actually the right one, but it was not obvious for a reason I would still like to know more about.
I had already tried bypassing Gatekeeper in my usual way --
-- Security settings for downloading apps were set to "Mac App Store and identified developers".
-- Control-click or right-click to get the context menu.
-- Then select "Open" and simpley answer one question in a dialog box to then open the file
(without having to set your computer to accept all future unidentified applications, and only accept this one file.)
That is how it worked until now-- bypassing Gatekeeper this way is still bringing up the error that the file is corrupted.
But with these files (all of them, my original, the Project that was consolidated and a snapshot), none of them worked.
Only bypassing Gatekeeper by allowing apps to be downloaded from "Anywhere" works.
So did something change in Max recently preventing using the context menu to launch an app I created? Is this really the only way it can work?
The aim here is to share small patches with students in an electronic music class / laptop orchestra who do not use Max normally and do not have it installed. It needs to be as simple as possible.
See this Apple support doc: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202491
(The last paragraph might be important, but since I have this problem even in my home office, it may not be an issue of the lab environment).
Is there something else I can do to the apps to help make them simple to open ?
