Trouble with sudden loud static noise?

Using Max 7, on a 2013 macbook pro running Sierra. A very (very) loud static noise will suddenly happen occasionally when audio processing is turned on, reading full on the level monitor. Doesn't seem to happen with any one particular patch, only requirement is that there's at least one ADC-----DAC pair somewhere in it (input/output device doesn't make a difference, and I don't necessarily mean the ADC and DAC are directly connected, pretty sure it isn't feedback).
Getting the amplitude (I believe I used peakamp~) of the signal while it's occurring reads INF. The sound will persist for a while, eventually going away on its own (turning audio on/off does not seem to clear it, but restarting Max does), and seems to happen more frequently the longer Max has been running. I think it could potentially be a driver issue, but not too sure. Anyone have any ideas? It's pretty annoying especially when I'm working with my headphones on.
Also relevant, I have never had it happen when running max on my windows machine.

Do you have anything logged on the Max window when you open Max?

Nope. No messages in the console that correlate with the noise.
