Use of spectral centroid in signal processing.

Hello,
I have created a max/msp patch for signal processing, were I added the calculation of the spectral centroid.
Even if I realise that the computation of the spectral centroid give us information about the brightness of a sound or in other words the pitch crescendo, I still don't get why we compute it though apart from extracting information about the brightness, like in practice can I use it somehow, or why is it used generally in sound processing labs?
