Any time you add new files in Max's path, especially externals, the File Browser might need a few seconds before the new files are registered at startup. It means for instance that the external's names cannot be typed with auto-completion in an object box, so you might think the external is not there. Have a look at the File Browser icon in the left part of the toolbar. If there's a blue bar below it, it means that the File Browser is registering the new files. You'll see that the bar is filled progressively. It is only when the bar disappears that all new files can be considered as registered and new external's names can be typed with auto-completion.
