Using Max with modulars?
Hello fellow Maxers, I'm just asking out of curiosity (as I begin my modular journey) how many folks on here are using Max with modular synths, and if so, what you are doing and how you are doing it? And do you have links to resources, stories, examples, etc? I'm hoping to hook Scheme For Max up to a modular soon. :-)
I make M4L devices to generate pitch/trigs/gates/modulation. I imagine if I had a DC coupled interface, I'd be doing things a but differently. i.e. straight up signals as opposed to a MIDI >cv conversion. I'm sure with the right setup, you could get some really interesting interactions going between a modular, and the max world. I'm sure some folks will chime in with cooler stuff than me. That being said, its awesome and totally worth pursuing.
I use MIDI to CV interfaces. And Expert Sleepers ES8, ES6, and ES3 direct coupled audio interfaces. You just need to be careful following the signal protocols (voltages) for various types of signals - 1 v/oct, gate, trigger, modulation CV , etc. I have both output signals from MAX to my modular setup, and input to Max from the modular side. Along with Max I've built large hybrid systems with modular, Max, and VCVRack all together. Integrating the modular hardware and the computer is great fun and really powerful.
Nice, that's what I'm hoping to do as well. I will start with some expert sleepers kit, but want to learn how to make my own with beaglebones and the like too. Do you have any suggestions on interesting links, reads, etc?
I sort of just searched around the internet tubes to look for help. The expert sleepers sight was really helpful. They have a good (but old) video on using an Es-8 and VCVRack. If you are on a Mac and want to use VCVRack, currently you can have only one audio interface module in VCV. Since the Es-8 isn’t really meant to be hooked up to your speakers, you need to create an aggregate device with your normal audio interface and the Es-8. There are audio interface modules with loads of inputs and outputs in VCV. The video is here: https://youtu.be/6mOAgqcM2eI
