I just snagged a Launch Control XL and have..absolutely no idea how to go about using it in Max 7. I downloaded the HAZEN control patch (https://cycling74.com/tools/novation-launchcontrolxl-controller-mapping) but I don't understand how to use it. 

Basically all I'm wanting to do is have the knobs and faders control float numbers (to control oscillator pitches, FM degrees, etc etc etc). Any very very intro help would be great!

Have a look at the help file for the [ctlin] object. Should be pretty clear. 

With Max 8, you might use MIDI map assignment, but in Max 7 you have to use [ctlin] for knobs/faders and [notein] for notes/pads (or equivalent objects).
