VR - Creating a point + click menu

I've been playing around with the VR Package (it is awesome) hoping some jitter wizards can chime in...how to go about creating a point & click style menu? I've figured out how to display a menu (using jit.gl.videoplane or jit.gl.text) and create a "laser pointer" (using a long jit.gl.gridshape cylinder) My questions... Is jit.gl.videoplane best option for the menu display? How to detect when something is being pointed at? How to make the length of the "laser pointer" always match the distance from the controller to the menu item.
Here is an example of what I am trying to create https://gfycat.com/thornyvioletalaskanmalamute

I was looking into this before, and made some progress using the "touch_ray" messages to jit.gl.picker.
Another way would be to use the collision handling of jit.phys.ghost.
