In my good old JavascriptInMax.pdf from 2006, I read page 22 that ;max preempt 1's equivalent in js is 
max.preempt (1);

yes max. (equivalent of ;max)  is a reserved method in js for max, but anything  equivalent to ;dsp, for instance dsp.start() doesnt seem to work.

Any Max4Live device with jweb (Chromium Embedded Framework) in them, if initiliazed at launch, for example while opening a recent set, will cause ableton main thread to crash with the stacktrace below. If the device is loaded on a track after ableton is initialized, they don't cause crash. you can try this open source device, 

, for quick reproduction; or make a new Max4Live device with jweb in it and save with it on any track and close/open that set afterwards, and smile at your crash :}

Could you file a bug report here? Be sure to include all versions of the software you are using (Live, Max, etc), your Support Info from Max, and if you are using the bundled Max or a newer version. Thanks!

I will file a bug report there, as I could just reproduce it on 3 different computers( 2 macOS and 1 windows) with official and simple node4max express example from there.

I just clone the repo, open .maxproj, export max4live device(with server.js and node_modules embedded or not embedded both crashes),

then load created .amxd on a track, save the set and close ableton. when opened back, load the recent saved set and the same crash with same stack happens

I've been struggling to get my head around using node.js in conjunction with Max; I've been trying to build a patch that is able to aquire the text from a wikipedia page (using the random page feature on their website) and output it into a message box.

So far I have a jWeb object that outputs the url of the webpage it's on, this is then fed into a node.script object. I don't have any experience with JavaScript and I'm still getting my head around the complexities of Max as it is (so I'm very aware that I've bitten off a bit more than I can chew lol).

I have followed a few different tutorials on how to access web data in Max using Node.js but haven't been too successful.

The first and main issue is the fact that every time I input the URL into the node.script I get a console message saying "unhandled message" followed by the URL. I'm mainly not sure how to set up the script in order to recieve a different URL each time then execute the same function. Along with this, I'm struggling to understand how to output messages back into Max from the script.

If anyone is able to help me trouble shoot these ideas or point me in the right direction with this patch that would be really appreciated!!

Hey, I was testing the pattr to js with the functions getvalueof and setvalueof and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I can save the code and the patch with no issue and even reload the patch, but when I close Max and open the patch, it crashes. I can only open the patch by opening a copy of my patch without the js object and then opening the current patch (with the js object).

I can only re-open my project if I delete the return line.

But if I don't close Max, I can use the js code and it works fine.

I can't reproduce in a simple patch, can you post your patch and js?

I keep testing and I think I found what it can be.
In the patch I had another pattr object connected to a jsui object. This is what made it crash when loading.
Probably I need to address the pattr thing inside the jsui object too...

I want to programmatically change track routings. I want to be able to assign the input channel according to whether the name of the channel matches a string.

 say I need to assign input_routing_type / input_routing_channel according to the values found in available_input_routing_types / available_input_routing_channels. So I figure the first step is to enumerate the channels available and find the one I want:

I don't use JS, but have a Max patch that basically does what you want. It allows to change the input routing of the track where the patch/device is loaded. You may use it directly or as a model for translation to JS. (I would be interested to see the JS version for comparing)

I'm sure I'm missing something simple. I can't find any examples of people working with dict return values from the LOM, it doesn't work as the documentation suggests, nor does it work like a regular JS object would. I have seen examples of creating a dict in JS, but that is a problem further down the road.

I have just tested your JS example and can confirm that t contains a proper dictionary where t.getkeys() should work.  So it looks like a bug and I would contact cycling support.

I agree its a pain/confusing to work with returned dictionaries like this.  But you can actually use JSON.parse() on the LiveAPI query response to get an iterable JS object.

getloc is a reference to the function that's defined later in the file.  Look at the Task object link in the above and it's examples.

In msg_int(s), the s is just the local variable name for the number (an integer).  In this case it's getting either 1 or 0 from the toggle box outside the [js window_loc_watch.js].   FWIW I probably would've named that variable "enable_polling"  or "polling_bool" or something like that to be more descriptive.

"wind.location" includes the toolbars "window getsize" does not and reports x/y point of the bottom-right corner instead of height/width. You could probably build the same js around "this.patcher.getattr('rect')" which gives you the same coords like [thispatcher] but value 3 and 4 are height/width. You see there's a little inconsistency with the different methods to get window location in Max.

why do you think obj.jsarguments[1] holds the position of an object? 

Because I don't know anything about javascript.
How does that question help to get a solution?


The question points to the error in your script. Try replacing that with obj.rect[0]

are you guys going to build an eraser tool for the patching canvas?

Transferring a patch written on Mac to Windows running vosk and sox. Installed the necessary libraries and of course node.js on the PC, and only changed the file paths in the code without touching anything else.

and I received this error message, it can't even find the module in line 1:

Since node.js has great cross-platform support, it's likely the file paths that went wrong.

I tried path.normalize() and it didn't help. Any suggestions on how to write the file paths on Windows?

Hi community. I've been working on making a chatbot in Max using two node.js objects. One for the Deepgram API and the other for the OpenAI and Elevenlabs API's. I use a Deepgram.js object to convert speech to text which sends as a message to the elevenlabs-openai.js object which processes the prompt and plays the audio response from max. The problem is that the Deepgram.js object listens to the audio and transcribes it as the next prompt causing a feedback loop. I've tried an option with adding a toggle to turn on and off the recorder library in the deepgram.js object but I'm novice to javascript and couldn't get it to work properly. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

What you want to achieve is not very clear.
If I get it right, I guess you first say a phrase in a mic, the audio is transcribed by deepgram, which sends the text to elevenlabs_openai, which synthetises audio from it and play it through the speakers, which audio is then captured by the mic and sent to deepgram, and so on. Is this it? 
If so, I guess you indeed want to control when deepgram receives audio from the mic instead of always listening. But I can't tell how to do that without seing your patc and js files. Is the audio captured from within Max directly? Or is it handled by node? 

Also, maybe it's just a design issue: in the context of a chatbot, why would you say something, then hear the computer repeating what you just said but in a synthetized manner?

By the way, I'm quite curious to see how some messages degrades/evolve through many iterations of that feedback loop.


Thanks for your response. The goal is to create a conversational chatbot through Max with little to no manual input. (ie: entering text, on/off controls with the exception of starting the node.js scripts). The audio is captured/handled by node in the maxDeepgram.js object using the recorder library. I'm leaning towards a toggle to pause() or resume() the recorder. I've added the patch and node.js files but you'll need your own keys to try it out. Appreciate any suggestions :) 


According to the recording library documentation, you can pause your recording by calling "recording.pause()" and resume with ""recording.resume()".
You can simply try to declare functions like such: add the following code

maxAPI.addHandlers({
    pause: () => recording.pause(),
    resume: () => recording.resume()
});


in maxDeepgram.js, then, before send your "message" message to elevenslabChatGPT, send the message "pause" to maxDeepgram.js to call that function and actually pause the recording. Then, once the text is played through the speaker,  send "resume" to maxDeepgram.js.

I did not tested this, but it should work straight away.

I'm having trouble working with dynamically created arrays of buffers in javascript. 

(I am planning on using javascript to iterate through samples in each buffer which is why I'm not using a polybuffer, where I don't believe you can use peek/poke w a polybuffer.)
