We have an ableton set with about 100 songs in it. We want to automatically calculate the length of each song (between locators) and then update the locator names to include the song lengths. Does that sound like something that would be possible?

Sadly, no.  The Live Object Model doesn't have a way to set the name of Locators (aka CuePoint).  You can only GET their name / position.

As a kinda-like-that hack it is possible to make a MIDI track and automatically put clips in place that have the song name / duration you want.  But that's not the same...

I get a lot of Ableton projects in arrangement view that I need to convert to session view files. In these projects the locators are already set and named.

What I'm trying to do in max is to automatically rename the clips (in all or in a single track: doesn't matter much!) to the locator names.

I already found out a way to print the locator names, and also know how to rename clips in session view. But can't seem to combine this to a working device.

Clips in Arrangement aren't available to the LOM, you'll not be able to achieve this currently...

There seem to be no LOM calls for editing clip envelopes the way that there are for clip notes.

What's the reasoning behind that? Was it that recording is the intended method to automate things?

I haven't been looking into it.  I went with having a single rack of parameters that are always mapped to the main controls on my setup and didn't use the clip envelopes for those.

Same here. Looking for functions to get/set/observe envelope data from clip. 
It would just be a list with x/y values, right?

I never got info on this from Cycling or Ableton.

 If you're looking for automation editing stuff, I'm attaching a device that was an attempt at creating a sort of a "clip automation setter" by flashing record.  I ditched the approach because it seemed way too clunky. The device still has a number of kinks to work out, (use at your own risk!) but maybe you can pull something useful from it.

I have just found that Ableton beats counting is a bit weird.

I have a test project with 2 bars in 4/4, 2 bars in 6/8 and then again 4/4.

To debug what's going on the Ableton internal counter, at each tick I have logged bars/beats/sub_division/ticks, song time (expressed in beats, not in ms as reported by documentation) and time signature.

As you can notice, when time signature switch from 4/4 to 6/8 Ableton BEATS=5 (does not reset to BEATS=1), because Ableton computes bars/beats/sub_division/ticks reasoning as the current time signature is the same for the entire song. So when it switched to 6/8 Ableton does the computation as the whole song is in 6/8.

This is even more evident in the transition back from  6/8 to 4/4. You will notice that the BARS count decrease (from BARS=5 to BARS=4):

BARS=5 BEATS=4 SUB=2 TICKS=53 | TIME=13.966938775510204 | SIGNATURE=6/8

BARS=4 BEATS=3 SUB=1 TICKS=2 | TIME=14.006938775510203 | SIGNATURE=4/4

This is because when switching back to 4/4, Ableton consider the entire song in 4/4 and update the time values accordingly.

The issue is that I find impossible to detect the real (musical) downbeat when a time signature changes like this occur. For musical downbeat I mean the real first beat of a bar (the one we hear with a different sound when we activate the metronome). To do that we should know every possible signature change in the project, but we can't assume to start the project always from the beginning and detect all the signature changes along the way.

Has anyone managed to find a solution to this problem? I tried but failed miserably.

The only way I have found is to add a listener to a button on the controller to manually compute a beat offset when a beat misalignment occur due to time signature change and apply that offset to the beat reported by Ableton. Better than nothing 🤷‍♂️

Hello.
I read the tutorial:Midi Tutorial 1: Basic MIDI. The tutorial specifies in the paragraph "The midiin and midiout objects":A simple way select a MIDI device is to double-click on the MIDI object you want to assign. Double-clicking on the midiin object produces a menu of available MIDI inputs, while double-clicking on the midiout object will display a menu of MIDI outputs.
The problem is this: when I click on the midiout object for example, a window appears saying: "none".
If I look in the Options menu (MIDI setup...), there is nothing to indicate at the level of "Inputs" and "Outputs".
My question is: how do we configure MIDI setup?

The functionality that you are looking for is only available in the full (standalone) version of Max. It is not available in Max4Live. You cannot assign the MIDI objects in M4L (such as [midiin], [midiout], etc) to any external MIDI device. They can only be connected directly to the track in Ableton Live in which you define them. You can't even receive/send MIDI data from/to another track in Ableton Live easily unless you do some clever jiggery-pokery.

THANKS. Now I understand better why nothing worked. 
Finally, until I have purchased the full version of Max, there is no point in me reading the tutorials dedicated to MIDI in Max for Live...?.

I'm looking for a way to make (or find) a device with a simple button that say : 

It would create an automation with a single breakpoint on each parameter ( like aux sends, volume, pan, plugins, clip gain...). 

A great feature would be "except ( - Track On/off - clip - mixer - plugin...)" and delete .

I can't find a way with Live Object Model (except call_clear_automation) and i'm still a beginner with Max.
