I'm writing some externals in c++ using the min framework. I want to make an external to be used in a Max4Live patch. The external will take a prompt as input and generate a composition as a responce. The composition should be based on the name of the tracks in the live arrangement (this will tell the model which instruments to write for). Next the score for each track will be placed in midi clips on the relevant tracks.

I'd like to create a custom UI object that has multiple text edit fields.  

Context:  My externals connect to a cloud service to enable access to data from that cloud in Max.  In order to connect we need to gather user auth credentials.  I don't really want to use Max's standard textedit objects for this.  Because distributing patches that pass user's sensitive data trough patch chords seems like a bad idea.  I want to build a custom UI object user's can type into so masked  data remains at the code level and is never accessible in the patch itself.

 example in the Max SDK.  I can definitely use this as a starting point.  It will be easy to modify this to mask the data onstream, and pass the the user input to other objects using the notification system so it's never exposed in the patcher itself.   I could use 2 or more objects based on uitextfield to compose a bpatcher that will serve as my Authentication screen.

Problem:  It would be better for the Auth Screen to be a single Max object.  The default textfields are fairly nondescript.  If I distribute my patcher, a nefarious actor could swap out my custom textfields with some other textfields.  The auth screen would look unchanged, but the user has just typed their credentials into an illegitimate input field.

The Question:  I'm not seeing a way to include multiple textfields in a single object.  In fact, making an object a textfield seems to overwrite most of paint's other functions.  Is there a way to compose a UI objects from multiple component UI Objects?  Or a different way to get multiple textfields into my object?

I'm aware that instead of using textfields I could paint text directly and repaint based on the key methods.  But this results in some behaviour that don't feel natural (like being unable drag over and highlight the text).  I would like this auth solution to appear to be as seemless and native as possible.  

I know I've posted a number of similar threads on this topic.  Thanks to all for your input!

MAX SDK: UI Object with Multiple Textedit fields?

I'm working on a package of externals in MIN.  It's been going great.  But now I want to do a custom UI object.  Specifically a custom Textfield object.  Support for UI objects, and especially textfield objects, seems a bit limited in MIN.  And there's a readymade example in the Max SDK that would be easy to modify to do what I want.

With the recent changes to Max SDK to unify the build architecture, and since MIN Devkit includes Max SDK, I thought this would be easy to do.   But not only am I finding it not easy, I've been at it for several hours and I can't find a solution.

1)  Paste the contents of the the MaxSDK example into the a .cpp min object.  

The linter is okay with this.  But we have a problem that 	jpatcher_syms_init() is undefined. 

2)  Modify the project's CMakeLists.txt to include jpather_syms.c.  

Now the project will build.  But when I create an instance of the object in Max runtime the object is red.  No error, no debug, nothing.

3) Same as above, but replace the headers with #include c74_min.h, and add "using namespace c74::max;" at the top.

Got the same results.  Object builds, but appears red when used in Max runtime.

3) Try to generate the project as an actual Max SDK Project:

Copy max-sdk-base folder from the MaxSDK package into my package in the same location.

Copy the source code file and CMakeLists.txt from the MaxSDK example.

Try a few guesses on how to modify CmakeLists.txt in the package root to run the MaxSDK initialization scripts.

Same thing.  I can build the object.  But when I try to use it in Max, it's red.  No error message.

4) I tried several variations of the above, and also attempted to work with a non-UI object.

It all ends the same way.  I can build the object, but it is red in the Max runtime.

Has anybody done this before?  It seems like recent work on the Max SDK should make this explicitly supported.  I was quite surprised to run into difficulties here.

How to include Max SDK Objects in a Min Devkit Solution?

Greetings! I'm trying to create a custom textfield object that will mask the user's input. Like when you type a password into an online form, and the input appears as "****".

I thought I would begin by trying to modify the 

example that comes with the Max SDK. I'm fairly proficient with MIN Devkit. But making the leap into the deep end of Max SDK is proving a bit difficult.

I found the following method in the code:

This appears to be the method that takes the key input, appends it to the string, and redraws the box with the new string. If I want to append a * instead of the character the user typed, this would seem to be the method to modify.

I tried messing around here, just adding some print statements, etc. But it looks like this method doesn't actually fire when a key is pressed. My print statements don't appear, any breakpoints in here don't trigger, and any changes I make don't seem to have any effect.

Can anyone help me understand what this method is doing? Or what other methods I should look to modify to achieve my goal?

I also, I notice throughout this code, the function object_method() is being called with descriptive gensyms like "insertboxtext" and "selectbox," etc. These seem to calling additional, seemingly undocumented, functions that are available to the object.
