I am trying to make work a patch that before used to work properly, now I get this errors when trying to assign textures to videoplanes , each time , this 3 errors :

jit.gl.texture: update_texparameter_state: GL Error: Invalid operation

The video plane looks black.
What is going on and how can I fix this ?

I'm trying to use jit.gl.isf, which I've downloaded from the package manager, and I'm finding a number of the examples aren't working.

For example, for the audioreactive examples they produce errors such as:
'jit.gl.isf: ERR: unrecognized param "waveImage"'


This is in both glcore and gl2.
Has anyone else encountered this? 
Looking at the github it looks pretty dead over there...
Do we know that this is a working/supported project? FWIW I have a normal/vanilla version of Max with no issues with other externals or objects.

The last update to the package was adding support for Apple Silicon, but other than that I haven't heard any reports of breakage.

I just installed from the package manager on a new machine, launched the Isf-launcher Extras patch, installed the ISF library, relaunched the patch and everything seems to work.

I do see that some of the Audio Reactive examples are posting errors because they are not expecting a waveImage texture parameter. Simply open the Auidio_To_Image sub-patcher and disconnect the waveImage input to test those.

If there is other breakage I'm happy to investigate, but this just sounds like patcher errors.

Well, I've just discovered that jit.playlist can not contain more than 14 FullHD files and play them; if  I exceed this number, Max console does not give any errors and  jit.playlist seems to work, but it does not output any video signal.

I am having some trouble with the @parallax attribute of the [jit.gl.pbr] object.The problem I am facing is visible in the video trailer about this object published on youtube by Cycling '74, at 0:22 (link at the end)

Explaining it, it occurs that the edges of the object mantain a linear profile instead of showing, as they should, different heights and contours as a result of the heigtmap process.

The correct behaviour is visible in the second part of the video, from 1:15 on, where you clearly see that the shape do not mantain it's spheric nature.

this feature has not been implemented as it requires more drastic architectural changes than we initially anticipated.

I understand, I will then go on with [jit.gl.material].

This has been bugging me for a while...i'm not sure how to stop jit.playlist from playing back audio apparently attached to video clips. weirdly, it plays them out of my computer speakers even if other audio is coming out via my headphones (i think this possibly happens with MSwavetable sounds as well - it's fine when i'm using an interface but not when i've just got my headphones plugged in). Does anyone know how to stop these video clips playing back sound? 

F.Y.I. this is particularly an issue with several of the built in videos that come with max, the man going 'om!', and the car crash test one, which has funny bouncy synth noises.

jit.movie and jit.playlist do not route the movie audio into Max, therefore they use system sound settings. 

You can control the volume of the sound by sending either object a "vol" message, such as "vol 0." to turn the sound down completely.

Sorry for the necro post but I agree with @Nye Parry that this information shouldbe mentionned in the documentation.
And I've some details to add for future people.
I am building a simple player which plays several movies (with sound) from a list one by one. I started by using a simple ji.playlist and a videoplane. I spent like 3 hours trying to understand how to send the sound to my soundcard and not to the PC speaker. I eventually found a solution but the sound was veeeeerry kind of saturated, especially with low frequencies. It's a bit better if I set the vol attribute lower, but for some movies with very low frequencies I have to set under 0.4 in order to avoid saturation. Which in turn lower the overall volume of course. Happened with different movies (that play well otherwise in VLC at 100% volume for example), and with different sound cards (Behringer FCA610 and Scarlett 6i6 gen2). Same issue with a simple jit.movie object.

I just found out that if I wanted a proper audio control and no weird saturation, I have to use jit.movie~. So now I have to build a plylist system by myself.

TL;DR seems like if you want to play video files with their sounds, the proper way is using jit.movie~.
Max 7 here with Windows 10.


I don't know if it was possible five and a half years ago, so this is for very recent users just like me. 

With the jit.playlist object you  can control the sound of video clips via the Inspector. Click on the Playlist, then open Inspector. Go to All an scroll to the bottom of the list, set Volume to 0, and done.

It also works by sending the message 'vol 0' to the playlist's inlet, and hit it when the patch is locked. Again, check Inspector for reference.

Here is the context: I want to capture a view of a gridshape textured with transparency. 
The issue I'm facing is: the alpha output of a [jit.gl.node @capture 1 @type float32]  gives values between 0. and 3. while I expect values between 0. and 1. Why that?
In char mode, values goes from 0 to 255 as expected.

Also, if you move the gridshape around +0. - +2. on the z axis, the maximum alpha value start to decrease slowly, while it stays at 255 in char mode.  I don't get how the position of a gridshape can alter transparency of its texture, given that in this example, the texture's transparency is either full or null, without intermediary value.

I came to this problem because I use [jit.gl.node @capture 2 @type float32] on a bigger patch, and float32 is necessary in order to get enough precision on the depth channel, but it completely messed up what I want to display as I first built the patch with a char node output. Adding a [clamp 0 1] before any operation on the resulting alpha channel solved the issue but I don't get why I'm getting such difference at the first place.
Any thought?

I guess it's related to blending and/or lighting, but I'm limited with my OpenGL knowledge I think.

You are analyzing the color texture instead of the normals+depth texture. Simply take the third outlet of the unpack rather than the second:

My issue is about the alpha channel of the color texture, not the normals+depth texture.
"@capture 2", [unpack s s s] and [prepend jit_gl_texture] are remains of the main patch I forgot to clean with the copy-past.
So the example patch is correct and illustrates (not so well, I admit) the issue, which basically is: why is there a difference on the alpha channel of the color texture output from a [jit.gl.node @capture 1] if I set @type char or float32.


aha, apologies. you explained things fine, I just mis-interpreted.

jit.gl.material is simply summing up component color values, including alpha values. Maybe we should do something different here but we don't currently. I believe if you zero out the mat_ambient alpha, you will get something more expected in the final alpha output.

I does, but it also alters the alpha relatively to the light direction: shaded parts are made transparent, which I don't want.

Is it possible to customize the shader created by jit.gl.material? I tried to save the shader given when sending "get_gl3_shader" to the gridshape, then specifiying the file with @shader custom_shader.jxs on the jit.gl.gridshape, then deleted the jit.gl.material, but modifying the file does nothing, and when I resend "get_gl3_shader" I just get the default shader.

Is it possible to customize the shader created by jit.gl.material?

I just found that I need to instantiate the shader with jit.gl.shader first. However I don't get the same result as with jit.gl.material without tsome tweaking inside of the shader, but I think I can manage it, and it's another topic.

Hi,
I was playing with this RTSP server:

The server itself works fine, I can load video to stream and VLC opens it without an issue.
On the max path, I can load the RTSP demo https://www.wowza.com/developer/rtsp-stream-test and it works fine, however, once I try to load the video from my local RTSP server, Max stops responding. 
This happens every time I try to load my RTSP stream. I have tried changing localhost to 127.0.0.1 or my computer's local IP address but stops responding every time...

For me, this feels like a bug on the jit.movie that stops the whole Max to work!

Can anyone test this out and confirm? Or maybe I am missing something?

i have an issue with jit.movie with rtsp too
it seems jit.movie is not working well with rtsp.
 i have an ip camera. i can open its stream with vlc (rtsp://192.168.2.20:554/stream1) 
but with jit.movie nothing happen (error loading file)


unlikely we'll get this working in any recent update, so my recommendation would be exploring solutions using OBS and piping its output back to Jitter using Syphon/Spout (possibly using this Node project as a basis for controlling the OBS rtsp streaming remotely from Max).

If this is of interest, I may be able to find time to explore expanding that node project for this task.

I was thinking about trying to make an external with webrtc sdk client, that could output jit.gl.
I have successfully run webrtc server from node and could connect 2 web clients together, I know that there are projects that converts webrtc to rtsp. This could be a possibility establish real time streams without obs.
But i need more understanding of jit.gl externals programming...
OBS is great solution tho, obs window (app) capture and streaming content to virtual camera is one of the way to go, I am not sure how to stream syphon out from OBS (getting syphon is clear). Or what kind of solution do you suggest? Any tutorials for proper setup?
Sadly, there are no solution in syphon browser direct stream.

sigh, I forgot Syphon output from OBS isn't supported directly, though it is possible. You must first install NDI and the OBS NDI output plugin (this link also contains links for the NDI lib). Then install the free and awesome NDISyphon app. From OBS Tools menu select NDI Output Settings and enable the main output. Now in NDISyphon you should see the OBS stream as a source, enable it and you can receive the stream in Jitter. phew.

This link walks the process step-by-step for a different Syphon client, may be helpful

Thanks for sharing, this is very elegant solution, if I can get rtsp or webrtc or any other than screen capture method, into the OBS, then this solutions looks very elegant and hopefully stable. Also your node project to control obs remotely looks very interesting! I would be interested in contributing and you want, or maybe fork into my own projects.

Lets hope Cycling will brings someday good live stream feeds into Max without additional software like obs.

Can anyone tell me why my jit.render is no longer rendering a sphere as it was before. This is an edit on a delicious max tutorial that was working perfectly. Im unsure what ive done but its no longer rendering. Apologies for the messy code.

Hi Kieran,

The problem with your patch is that there's no object drawing the sphere. You're using a jit.gl.gridshape (that should draw it), but with the attribute @matrixoutput 2; this makes jit.gl.gridshape stop drawing the sphere and output the geometry as a matrix. 
This technique is used to apply further manipulation to the geometry.
The matrix then is plugged into a zl object, which implements many different functions, but 3D rendering is not one of them. 
Look at this edit of the patch:

I plugged the matrix into a jit.gl.mesh object that draws the sphere again. I also attached a jit.gl.pbr object to shade the mesh.

Wow, crazy fx. One last question. Where is this rendering to? i want to make it fullscreen for projecting and also get rid of the bar at the top with the minimize and x. 


To answer your first question, the scene is rendered to a texture via the object jit.gl.node. Try to connect it to a jit.pwindow object, and you'll see the rendered image. Then, the texture (after further manipulation) is plugged into a jit.gl.videoplane, that displays it on screen (inside the jit.world window). I'd suggest checking out the help files of these objects to understand better how they work

To make the window fullscreen, you have three possibilities:
1) click on the window and then press "ESC" to enter and exit fullscreen mode
2) send to jit.world the message "fullscreen 1", to enter full screen and "fullscreen 0" to exit.
3) set manually the attributes of  jit.world, in particular 
- "border 0" to remove the top bar
- "floating 1", to keep the window always on top
- "rect x0 y0 x1 y1" to decide the extent and positioning of the window;  x0 y0 is the position (in pixels) of the top-left corner of the window, and x1 y1 s the position of the bottom-right one

No way, when was this implemented? No more key into sel32 into toggle into fullsreen$1!

Happy post RNBO day everyone, I've got some details and context on what the Jitter team has cooked up for the 8.5 update.

Top of the list, GLCore (or glcore) and what it's all about. With 8.5 we've done 2 things:

Renamed the formerly beta gl3 engine to glcore

Transitioned our default graphics engine from the legacy gl2 to the modern glcore.

The reason for the renaming is to better reflect the reality that most graphics cards will support OpenGL versions beyond version 3. The engine provides support for modern core profile OpenGL at whatever version your graphics card supports.


For existing gl3 users not much has changed in functionality (other than the new juicy bits described below). However the consequences extend beyond the technology. We now have a solid foundation for continuing our engine modernization and growth, and can fully document the new behavior and features. To that end there are a handful of new examples to check out in the glcore Examples Extras patch.

For gl2 users this is a significant but hopefully seamless change. We will publish more details on how best to utilize modern graphics engines and other ins and outs, and we strongly encourage contacting support with any issues. However if you wish to revert back to gl2 simply change your Graphics Engine (gfxengine) preference back to gl2. You first might want to check out the afore mentioned glcore Examples patch to see what you're forgoing.


A new entry to our Jitter Tools suite is the jit.gl.textmult object, which allows for manipulating letters and words of text using a jit.gl.multiple like interface and highly efficient mesh rendering. As an added bonus for text lovers we’ve removed the 1024 character limit on jit.gl.text input strings.

Also included with 8.5 are some lovely new jit.gl.pass post processing effects. The atmospheric effect adds global fog and atmospheric scattering to any 3D scene with ease, and for experimenting with global illumination check out the temporal screen-space ambient occlusion (tssao-gi) and screen-space reflections (tssao-gi-ssr and ssr) effects.

Speaking of global illumination, the new jit.gl.environment object handles the loading and sharing of environment map resources for image based lighting (IBL), cubemap, and skybox rendering for supported objects. This currently includes jit.gl.pbr, jit.gl.material, and jit.gl.skybox. The object functions like jit.gl.light, where if a context has an environment attached, the supported objects will use it for rendering.

We've also added glTF PBR material support to jit.gl.model, giving much better results when rendering these model files. In the video below we see non-PBR rendering on the left, and PBR rendering on the right.

jit.gl.meshwarp - output_mesh_matrix message to output the mesh vertex data

Rob, congrats to you and c74 on glcore. I get the effort your team put into it. :-)
Are there C/++ examples for the updated interfacing possible HOST to/from GPU for textures, buffers, mapping between max,opencl,opengl, etc.

Unfortunately I don't have a great answer for you. The SDK has not been updated with examples for developing for glcore, and given the current state of flux in our backend graphics engine work, I don't have a good estimate for when that might change. 

That being said, both Syphon and Spout are open source and demonstrate how an external can support both legacy gl2 and modern glcore using some wrapper functions we expose in the jit.gl.draw.h header file. If you're only concerned with core profile support you can ignore these wrappers and link to the gl3 library headers instead (which may be easiest by defining GL3_VERSION=1 in your project preprocessor definitions). Additionally, the basic principles of jit.gl external development outlined in our SDK documentation still hold true.

I'm also more than happy to provide whatever insight I can for any brave explorers in this space.

I have a few questions as I use it.

Will the pbr in jit.gl.model be reflected without jit.gl.pbr connected? (I loaded the glTF and it seems to reflect the pbr textures without specifically connecting jit.gl.pbr or jit.gl.material). and, I could not change pbr parameter on jit.gl.model.

Also, if the texture loaded in jit.gl.model references a multi-texture by albedo, can I use the multi-texture in jit.gl.pbr when drawing with matrixoutput or jit.gl.mesh?

Jitter's material has many inheritance relations and parameters, and jit.gl.model is very difficult due to some invisible parts, so it would be great to have contents like 1st step.
