Ableton + Live Video Recording - is it possible?

Hi Cycling community,

I run a not for profit peace and music project called The Human Sound Project - http://www.thehumansoundproject.com - its a project that empowers groups of people from different cultures and religions to come together through an interactive music experience and create new songs about their stories.

I have come across a bit of a hurdle trying to incorporate live video into the project and I am wondering anyone could help me?

To give you little more background about the process: I work with the groups, to facilitate human sounds (singing, stomping, clapping) which are inspired by the groups’ stories. These sounds are recorded into ableton as audio loops into individual ableton clip slots and then I work with the group to form a composition using the audio loops.

I want to start working with video loops as well enabling the groups to form their own video clip to go with the song they make. Basically what I am seeking to do is setup a camera in the room and record a video loop automatically everytime I record a new audio loop in ableton. That is, video begins recording when i hit record on any ableton clip slot and then video stops recording as soon as the audio stops recording in ableton. From this action a new video sample is created which can be synched to the audio. That way after the event, we will have a whole bunch of video clips that easily be synched to the audio and the groups can play with creating their own music video clips.

Also I would like the group to be able to see the video loops (through a projection) as they are recorded and the video loops are synched to the audio loops such that everytime I play back an audio loop, the group can not only hear the audio loop but also see the video of themselves making that sound. Seeing themselves making the music that is being played back would be useful in certain situations to inspire the group.

Has something like this been done? i have been looking all over the internet but have found nothing that does the job - looked at Modul8, VDMX, Resolume, Livegrabber etc but found little, at least to my eyes, to accomplish what I am seeking to do.

Just putting it out there, I am a bit of a novice when it comes to technology and programming.

Any advice or pointers would be awesome!

Thanks so much

Simon
