 is end of life since long. The goto solution for using a DMX USB Pro recently was using the serial object directly.

I wanted to start learning to write Max externals, and I chose to create an external for the DMX USB Pro.

A beta version of the package is available here:

 for sending and receiving DMX data from the interface  and

 for use with audio signals (sending DMX data only).

To install, download and unpack the zip package and copy it to the Max Packages folder. On first load of the externals Max might ask you to remove the quarantine attribute. Just confirm and continue (I don't have a paid Apple developer account, that's why). 

The externals are compiled for MacOS 10.15 and later and should load on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.

Looking forward for feedback and if there is interest in continuing this little project also collaborators are very welcome!

I post this here because (yep) I'm proud of my first audio plugin, made with RNBO and JUCE, but also because, when I started, I struggled with documentation and finding examples for what I needed. Since it's all open source and available on GitHub, maybe it can be useful to someone.

This is not only my first RNBO project, it's also my first C++ application, so I can't guarantee things are done the standard or the elegant way, but it does what expected and it does it quite smoothly.

The plugin is a live-input granulator. The granular engine is designed to be truly realtime: grains can begin playback as soon as the first input samples arrive, without waiting for a complete segment of audio. A margin is calculated dynamically in case of playback speed (pitch shift) > 1.

Also, start time, duration, and playback are accurate down to the single sample, ensuring clean, phase-coherent output. When used transparently, with no elaboration applied to the grains (except for envelope), the output resembles the source.

The dsp code can be found in /dsp/Granulator.cpp. It's being realized using code generated with RNBO as a basis, and still partially relies on the RNBO api. It's cleaner, more human readable and (much) more efficient, but the main structure is still there.

I'm happy to answer to doubts, take feedbacks and fix bugs :)

What exactly is cycling 74’s stance on the backing and support for external developers? Specifically the developers that have put together those top libraries that make max/msp what it is today. Many come from ircam but some are just random enthusiasts.

I have spent the past few days trying to make a very popular external package work. Turns out it’s been broken pretty much since launch. I don’t blame the developer since it’s seemingly one guy at ircam doing all of it but it got me thinking. 

This specific package is mentioned all over as THE physmod library for max and good libraries for physical modelling is a pretty big pull for anyone looking at this kind of software. I don’t know how other software companies handles this sort of thing but wouldn’t it be a good idea to make an effort to make sure important libraries actually works and don’t break when the developer burns out? Max/msp would be a lesser product without some of these packages.
