we have been developing MIDI devices recently, and made a small M4L patch to dial the leds of our controller. The device sends out standard MIDI messages.

While refreshing also the controller's code, the controller reboots, behaves as we disconnected-connected the device. After this, Ableton's MIDI preferences shows the device name in red, and won't recognize it's input.

Any workarounds for this? Maybe skip Ableton and do it in stand-alone? Any help appreciated.

OS and version would b important information. Sounds like a windows MIDI driver thing - any other MIDI applications open other than Live?

Sorry, should have mention it. Windows 7 and Max 7.3.4., Ableton v 9.6.

Well there are not, or Atmel Studio (Visual Studio) count as one? I think also that it is a MIDI driver thing.

The red lettering in the MIDI preferences means that Live sees the port, but it is not available. That generally means the MIDI port is in use by another application.

Well beside Max and the development tool (which really shouldn't bother midi), we don't use any other application. Anyway we could solve our issues, thanks for your answer Evan.
